Wree trying to tie up the loose ends for our trip to ATL for the Dragoncon. I hear that parking is expensive and because it looks like there will be thunderstorms the whole time we are there, not sure what that could mean, we'll probably end up driving everywhere. Good thing or bad thing and how much does it cost to park your car in most places?

From the dragon con website. Looking at it, you might be better off just taking Marta. Since you'll be in traffic. At the hilton there's one parking lot beside it for $7 (although there might be a guy in a red cap taking cash since they're annoying opportunists) and then directly across the street is a $5 one. Both are uncovered, so if it's raining you'll still get caught in the rain. So I guess check the bus schedule. And if not .. there's your parking ...

Parking:

* Atlanta Hilton $17/day valet parking.
* Hyatt Regency Atlanta: $24/day valet parking (Parking garage height is 6 feet.)
* Marriott Marquis Atlanta: $24/day valet parking ($26/day for oversize vehicles)
* The parking decks around main hotels: $5 – $10 per day (cheaper on weekends if you can find a good rate), but generally don't allow in-and-out privileges.

All three hotels are convenient to MARTA's Peachtree Center station. The Hyatt and Marriott can both be reached from the station via indoor walkways. MARTA has direct train service from Hartsfield Airport's terminals with no transfers, with an approximate travel-time of 30 minutes from the airport to Peachtree Center and our hotels. Fare is $1.75 for a trip. There's a 50 cent surcharge to purchase a Breeze ticket, which can be loaded with more than one trip. For details check out www.itsmarta.com.

This depends on your hotel, but if you are willing to park in paid lots within a block or so of the hotel, the rate is about $8/day. Hotels can be as high as $24 because most of them only have valet.

One good thing is the Dragoncon held on the weekend. I think the weekend price is lower than the weekdays. The lowest I have seen is $5 in downtown. There are many parking meters around the downtown, but you may want to avoid it if you don't want to keep feeding quarters.

If you want to save some money, you may want to take a MARTA transit.

This may/may not be a good site for your needs.

*Edit: Sorry, I did not see that madcow already gave the same info.

There are lots of $5 parking spots around. my fav is this one...it's $5 and it's not far....

Also, I suggest you just walk to Peachtree Center, as it's an underground mall that connects 3 of the hosting hotels.

Madcow summed it all up very well - love it!!

I always have way too much crap to take MARTA so here have been my experiences:

I've stayed (safely) in the open air lots next to the Mariott and back behind the Days Inn (this was back when the con was being held at the Marts so its a little bit of a walk now). The down side - open air.

I've stayed in what I think is called The International parking deck (connected to the food court that is connected to the Hyatt). This lot is cheap but 1-they have wierd hours and 2-it is a little bit of hike if you are staying in a hotel other than the Hyatt.

And last - and now my standard - the hotel parking at the Mariott. I have stayed here the last 4 years. They have in and out service which comes in handy when needing to make a beer.... er um grocery.... run. It's pricey (that $25 adds up) but I'm a little wiggy about not having instant access to my vehicle so it's worth it. I also like having a place to stash my stuff on Monday after the 11am checkout time (you can leave it in an unprotected area but there ya go- unprotected - I'm not leaving all my goodies where anyone can walk away with them). So each year I budget in the parking.

I think some of the paid lots have in/out privileges, like the ones where you pay for an assigned parking space, but I'm not sure as I've never really tried it.
