i recently had to hide my son's game cube. he seems to want nothing else to do but play with games all the time. sometimes he's starving and wont eat until you make him turn the game off. i'm wondering what's the best solution for this problem? or how do i handle this..

One option would be to get one of those timers people use to automatically turn on outdoor lights and connect it to the Gamecube. You can set the timer to automatically shut the power off at anytime you want. If you want to allow him to play for an hour or two, this would be the way to go. The dowside is he will lose any progress since his last save point.

just let him play. he'll stop when he's done.

Or...simply revoke his game cube privledges until he learns to listen better. Just take it away for awhile and be consistent.

Parents are hated from time to time....they'll get over it.

of course, but why keep the kid away from his videogames. for some kids, videogames is the only thing they have going on in their lives :( :p

While I suppose that may be true, Hakeem, to me it is a very sad commentary. Parents are responsible for the development of their children in my opinion. If all a child has are his video games - at the exclusion of everything else -(friends, socializing, extra curricular activities, the ability to respond to parental stimuli in a timely fashion) then something is wrong.

I think some ground rules need to be set up - take away the game cube, or at least put some stringent rules on the time allowed for gaming each day and then work to find other activities for your child to be involved in. True, they may not like it at the time - but they will get over it. Allowing your child to sit for hours on end in front of the tv without any type of direction is not active parenting in my opinion and does not prepare your child for their future.

thats true. if all the kid does is play videogames, then he probably doesnt have anything else to do that he likes. its there that the parents need to step in and provide him new activities and stuff to do

I agree that something needs to be done to prevent children from playing games all of the time. I know several adults who have quit their jobs becuase it got in the way of their game playing. If children pick up this habit, the rest of their life will never develop. They'll still be living at home when they are in their 30's, locked in their rooms, searching for porn and playing games all day long.

...and does not prepare your child for their future.

Unless they are playing some Medal of Honor type game, then it will prepare them to die in Iraq. Or become a game reviewer for Shakefire.com.

I don't know how old your kid is, but if you want to get him away from the games, just give him a pack of condoms (unless his public school already supplies them) and a girlfriend. This ancient technique will have dust settling on the old Cube in no time, but may result in some unplanned grandchildren.

And Hakeem, you're on the right path to achieving your dream, just wait 8 years.
