I know it was mentioned in a previous thread that people were looking for a way to help others. Well, yesterday I found a great way to do so. It's called World Community Grid and the only thing you have to do to help is have your computer on. The whole process is powered by IBM (my employer) and I found out about it through an official e-mail at work. All you do is download a small program on your computer and whenever the program is running it computes scientific data and sends it back to the server for use in research. You are not asked to provide any personal data, it does not collect any personal data and you do not need to have a constant internet connection (it will only use the internet when connecting for a new job and sending the collected data back). For more information and to sign up, visit: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org . After you have signed up you can join Team Shakefire by using the following link: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=B25MXQ9FFN1 (or by searching for Shakefire in the team section of the member area).
Here is what my computer worked on while I was sleeping last night:
Human Proteome Folding Project
This project is determining how proteins coded by human gene sequences are most likely to fold. This knowledge will help scientists build the understanding needed to develop new treatments for diseases.

Our Mission, Our Work and You
World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity.
Our work has developed the technical infrastructure that serves as the grid's foundation for scientific research. Our success depends upon individuals collectively contributing their unused computer time to change the world for the better.
World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.
How Grid Technology Works
Making a difference has never been easier! Grid technology is simple and safe to use. To start, you download and install a small program or "agent" onto your computer.
When idle, your computer will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid's server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your computer performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!
