An Ian Rutledge mystery set in Berkshire with a backdrop of a huge, chalked white horse etched in the earth and a village intended for lepers. The mystery starts with the death of a war scientist, and quickly esculates to three more deaths before the killer is discovered. Again, Todd begins to discussion the use if poisonous gas to kill and injury British soldiers during WWI. Charles Todd, a writing team of mother and son, does an excellent job in setting and character. I especially liked the "simple" Slater, who proved to be an excellent judge of character.
