I saw Cat Power at the EARL last night and it sucked. I've never heard any of Cat Power's songs, I just went with a friend that likes her. So we walk in and there are no stage lights, just a faint red glow. Apparently, Cat Power is the shyest rock star around. She doesn't like to be in the spotlight, which makes me wonder why she's even in the business. So she's barely whispering these songs and barely playing three chords at most. Then the other half of the show she gets a guy to play guitar while she lays on stage and sings. It was quite odd. At one point she yelled at him for playing the wrong chords. Then she just kinda went backstage and didn't come back.
Instead of an encore, they found some homeless street performer guy to get on stage and play his trombone. His schizophrenic broken English was probably the best part of the show. I guess practice does not make perfect because he was terrible. He said he plays alot around Zoo Atlanta and Candler Park. I'm not sure if he was able to get a beer to feed his addiction.
Outside of the show we talked to a Cat Power fan that said that this was a good show. I said, "If this is a good show, what's a bad show?" She said when she came before to the Variety Playhouse, the Variety people wouldn't turn the lights off and she wasn't even playing entire songs, and she eventually just ran off stage and never came back. I'm glad I wasn't at that show, but if I was, at least I would be able to see her.
