Just got back from Troy and I have to say that I really liked it.
Great acting by all the huge cast with bigger names like Brad Pitt and the magnific Peter O'toole. Other huge names are of course Brian Cox (X2), Brendan Gleeson, Eric The Hulk Bana Sean Bean and The Elf Orlando Bloom.

As I was watching the movie, I couldnt NOT comparing it to LotR, specially since we have Legolas and Boromir in the movie :p
The war scenes are excellent though I like the ones from LotR more. The one-on-one combats though, are amazing here. Check out the movements that Brad Pitt's Achiles makes, awesome. His leg movement and his jumps, and the way he works the shield. beautiful.

Now the woman that makes all this start is Helen as we all know, and the beautiful German actress Diane Kruger is really worthy. She's splendidly gorgeous (and check out her body :hump: :p)

Brad Pitt is really good here, showing a huge range in his acting. His Achiles is the best thing of the movie. Orlando Bloom's Paris on the hand, it's a sissy that had to crawl back to his brother (Hector) so he would defend him (N)

Eric Bana's Hector is really good, his fighting is more human than Achiles' (who is a half-god) and he's just great as the leader of the Trojans.

Sean Bean is ok as Ulises (Odiseo). he doesnt have much to do here (his big part would be in a second movie reflecting Homer's The Odyssey) but his Horse looked great, even though I cant beleive the Trojans fell for it. really stupid.

and speaking of stupid, Priam (Peter O'toole), the King of Troy, is the stupidest character here. Extremely Well acted, but his desicions are really bad. First he doesnt listen to his first son Hector (who was next in line to be king) about keeping Helen in Troy, and then the biggest is his idea to take the Horse inside the walls of Troy against Paris' advice.

The almost not mention of the gods and past references (like why Achiles would die so easy if he were hurt in his heel) hurts the movie as people that don't know about Greek Mithology will have problems understanding some stuff though Id find it hard to think a person doesnt know about 'Achiles' Heel'.

The music is nonexisting here as there's only one song but I dont remember it, I just saw it in the credits.

all in all, Troy is an great epic movie with great acting and great battles, but still doesnt top my Top 2 movies this year: Kill Bill vol 2 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Y) :)

Id like to add this:

I agree that LotR and Troy shpouldnt be compared, as they're both very different, and LotR shows much more story than Troy, but with a few actors in both movies, and being both huge epics, is worth mentioning the comparisions.

anyway, the big battle scenes I thought were better in LotR than in Troy, but Achiles' fighting style is awesome. And I didnt noticed anything weird with his accent, thing that I read some people were complaining about.

about the special effects, here you dont notice them cause all the characters are humans while in LotR they have monsters and huge animals and even gollum who didnt seem like a CGI character but you knew he was one.

and about my comment about Paris, I know that thats the way it happened, but I think that Orlando Bloom kind of hurts his image playing this part of a coward

now, if Id have to choose between watching LotR or Troy, its hands down LotR.

OK I know I am setting myself up for what I am about to say--but that is the beauty of America--we can agree to disagree.

TROY is a beautifully shot -BORING-movie!!

That being said -I can say that in spite of that there were things that I enjoyed.
1) The performances of Orlando Bloom and Eric Bana---they captured
Hector and Troy perfectly--and yes any man that has the balls to
take another man's wife but runs and hides behind his brother after a
fight is a punk.
2) Peter O'Toole.
3)The acknowledgment that the war was fought for POLITICAL reasons-
not just for the return of a war.

LOTR and Troy can't help but be compared because of their mythology and scope-but TROY has one big disadvantage. It's mythology is much better known by the average person and movies about Greek mythology abound and have shaped perception of what is expected. Conversely, a GREAT movie would have put past efforts ..in the past.

The length of the movie doesnt matter if it is good...LOTR definitely demonstrates that--and that is the last I will mention LOTR.

I went to an advance screening of TROY. At the end of the movie--there was NO thunderous applause. Instead folks were walking out (myself included) being like UH THIS MOVIE IS NOT GOING TO FLOP BUT IT WONT MAKE MONEY PAST THE FIRST WK OR TWO-and figures are now bearing this out (dropping 45% last week).

Now let me mention two drawbacks of this movie:

1)BRAD PITT--I was not feeling him at all--and when he was dying
at the end-OH MY GOD-I felt like watching an old movie where it
took someone twenty minutes to die. He just didnt add to the
movie anything more than his name and physique. Can anyone
really say that he brought something special to the role of Achilles
the same way Tobey Maguire brought something to SPIDER MAN?
(AND NO I AM NOT COMPARING THE MOVIE SPIDER MAN TO TROY-
JUST WHAT THE ACTORS BROUGHT)
2)IGNORING GREEK MYTHOLOGY/PRESENCE OF THE 'GODS'
I know that complaining about 'magic' and 'worshipping gods
instead of GOD' very big in this country right now but if you
are going to make a movie which is steeped in mythology
-leaving it out dont make it PC safe. Now I dont have
to have the 'gods' in every other scene--but watching 'every
sword and spear 'conveniently miss' Achilles got to be boring
after a while.

So is TROY a BAD movie--no I have seen worse. But there were too many
things that kept it from being a GREAT movie.

(For the record---I loved Kill Bill V2 and ETERNAL SUNSHINE--movies I gladly recommend constantly but the same is not true for TROY)
