Let me start off by saying that I love Kevin Smith. I've loved everything he's done, except parts of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, it was a bit too commercial for my tastes. Now, on to Jersey Girl. This movie attempts to have a lot of heart but falls completely short of sentiment. The dialogue, although attempting to have substance, is dry and wandering. The movie tries too hard to be something that is out of Smith's grasps as a writer. There are no personal connections with the characters. Affleck's character becomes a complete asshole to his daughter for no explicable reasons after his wife dies and then jump forward a few years and all of the sudden there is a great relationship there and you miss how and why that happened.

Kevin Smith did an interview with Newsweek about Jersery Girl and the interviewer didnt like the movie either. Smith made some good points.. i'd link the article if i was a fat, lazy slob.
