View Full Version : Buying Dvds

OK I came up with this one because I bought some DVDs from BJ's (PLUG!!!) that they had on clearance--including BUFFY (Season 5) for $16 and JETSONS (Season 1) for $22 (and yes these are BRAND NEW DVDs)
I have been told WHY DO I BUY DVDS WHEN THEY JUST COME OUT-OR JUST BUY THEM FROM WALMART? Well many of us know the answer but let me just go over some things.
1) DVDs are cheaper the week they come out because they are on sale for
that week. I have saved as much as $20 (dvd set) doing that.
2) Although Walmart has low prices-a lot of times they are not the lowest
price--plus they dont carry every movie in their store-or will wait until
after that first week to carry some movies so that they dont have to put
it on sale (CHAPPELLE SHOW a good example of that)
3) Warehouse stores like Sams and BJ's tend to have flat prices-sometimes
they are the lowest--but they tend not to have variety.
4) Media Play/Sam Goody has the REPLAY (frequent buyer ) club--their
prices arent the greatest but the REPLAY cetificates sent if you spend
money there frequently make it also worth lookin into.
5) The best places to buy NEW dvds from are Circuit City, Best Buy, Media
Play, Target and Walmart.
Buying NEW dvds means that you have to be a smart shopper.......

ugggh, don't get me started on Media Play. Joey knows my feelings on this. That place SUCKS. They are the only place I know of that actualy charges the Suggested Retail Price on EVERYTHING and trick you into buying stuff when they are "on sale." Example:
say a DISNEY DVD just comes out at the normal Disney SRP of $29.99. You will NEVER see this DVD at Wal-Mart or Best Buy for $29.99....ever. Their normal non-sale price will probably be $19.99. Media Play will actually have it for $29.99 and then put it on a HUGE sale of $24.99 or $19.99 to trick the consumer into thinking they are getting a good deal "only that week" if they shop at Media Play. They are corporate a-holes and deserve to go out of business. The only thing good that they have are their action figures, clothing and other non-CD or DVD related items.
i wouldn't suggest buying DVDs at Media Play, you might as well go shopping for new DVDs at Blockbuster, you get the same "deal."
blupun
07-12-2004, 09:42 AM
Yeah Media Play is very very very BAD for doing that...but they like Blockbuster are learning ...LOL
I generally dont buy DVDs from there for the exact reason you mentioned BUT on SOME occasions if it is one which no one is putting on sale anyway-I will use my REPLAY certificates to 'make' it a sale price (LOL). Now I will say that they will do the 3 for $25 sale on DVDs (or a sale close to it) which is on a price tier versus just a select few. That because of their variety will make it worth it to shop for dvds on occasion....other than that...nah....

If you are in the Atlanta area the best way to buy DVD's is to go to Pendergrass Flea Market(off Hwy85 N at the Pendergrass exit). There you can buy them for $6.00 or trade for $3.00. New ones still in the wrapper are $10.00. You can also get TV'S for next to nothing( usually about 6months to 1 year old).

sounds like they are stolen, imports or bootlegs to me. a flea market vedor is not going to get a better wholesale deal than Best Buy or Wal-Mart.

These are not stolen or imports. This market is huge and the state always has someone there, checking out the venders. You must go early to get the movies that are new. Be sure to check out the prices from everyone. Some are priced higher than others. If you ever get a bad one they will work it out with you the following weekend. Some of the venders have a business in town. But this location has so much business and low overhead. Not like our usuall Mall locations.

OK I have to add this as a sub-topic: once again I went to BJ's (plug) and they had on clearance ANGEL SEASON 2 and 24 Season 2 for $20 each. I am speculating that they have to do that because unlike chains like Best Buy and Walmart--they cant send back non selling items because they are a wholesaler. Any thoughts on that and is this true at SAMS (I was a member of COSTCO and I know they didnt do any deals like that.)
I am a member at Sam's and I've never seen any deals like that. Of course, I just shop there periodically so it's possible that I've missed them.

Do any of you ever lend your DVDs to responsible fellow Shakefirians?
blupun
08-05-2004, 08:59 AM
Interesting question....since I dont know any SF folks in my area period, it's kinda 'not appliable' -but of course I got some input anyway... ;)
Personally I dont loan out my dvds on the most part-which is how my dvd colllection has grown. Even my 'responsible' friends tend to be sloppy in returning them and I hate reminding folks. (In fact one of my friends has my copy of the HAUNTED MANSION (a movie I WON not bought LOL) and still has it MONTHS later...LOL) I think that loaning stuff is a personal decision based on knowing people for awhile. No offense , but just loaning a dvd to someone I just know off here is a little much. I would need to know you in the 'real world' for a minute and see where that goes. Lets make sure I can walk into my home while you there and not have to worry about counting everything when you leave.
Now if you hate going to the video store, you might want to check the public library. Of course there are fewer copies than a video store but many people dont know that you can rent dvds and availablity of 'current' hits is surprisingly good. (Of course they arent going to have new movies like HELLBOY in already--but they do get a lot in.)
Terri218

Don't tell too many people about the library option since the waits are getting longer and longer. Sometimes you can luck out - I've already got Hidalgo waiting for me to pick up.

pawn shops are a good place to buy dvds also, and most will exchange it if it won't work.

I've recently rediscovered the library for borrowing DVDs. For blockbuster movies like Revenge of the Sith they have them available as soon as they are released to the general public. They also pre-order books that are anticipated to be popular (like Harry Potter). I was able to borrow a copy of the Half-Blood Prince the day it was released in addition to purchasing a copy of my own so my husband and I didn't have to fight over who got to read it first! LOL!

A good place to look if you live in Atlanta is the Sunday AJC. Most stores will advertise if there are any big sales or specials.
blupun
12-10-2006, 11:44 PM
Well this week is a good week if you are looking for tv shows on sale (as good as 'Black Friday'). Check the Sunday paper for the ads. Here are some examples:
1) ALL seasons of ANGEL for $17.99 each (Circuit City)
2) Remington Steele Seasons 4/5 $18 (Target)
I also have to give up props to BORDERS as well. If you dont shop there you should give them a chance. Although they specialize in books and coffee (LOL), they do sell dvds and cds as well. My problem with them is the same as the late Media Play--they sell dvds and cds at 'suggested retail price' aka HIGHER THAN MOST REGULAR PLACES--so most of the time I dont get any dvds or cds from them.
This past Friday however Borders came thru for me. I am also a member of their frequent buyer club so I get weekly emails from them . A couple of things with the frequent buyer club are 1) you get a 'personal shopping day' each month if you have spent $50 or more---10% off every purchase made on a designated day--including off most coupons and sale prices and 2) Borders also has a 'Christmas Club' in which 5% of all of your purchases for the entire year are put together and you can spend between 11/15 until 12/31 (or 1/1). I had a 'personal shopping day' which I hadnt used and $24 in my 'Christmas Club'.
Borders sent me a coupon for 40% off the LIST('regular') price of any one dvd set for 12/8 ONLY. So I went to the one over by Southpark Mall (because they have the best dvd collection to me of the ones here in Charlotte) and I decided to get SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE SEASON 1 (regular
price $69.99--an example of how high Borders can be (LOL)). So here is what went down :
First I gave them my 40% off coupon--that took off $28--leaving me at $41. Then I used my personal shopping day which took off another $4--my balance now at $37. I then applied my 'Christmas Club' $24 to that $37...leaving me with a balance to pay of ...$13 + tax. You cant beat that--that is all I have to say.
Anyway check out the sales and stock up......

I dont know if this has been said yet but for those who live in charlotte you can always check out cd warehouse, i got a couple seasons of friends in good condition there for $15 ea and Sam's club usually has them marked for 15-30 but they dont keep certain sets long. Or i always just keep a list of ones i want that i'm not in dire need or want for and when blockbuster has 4 for 20 or sometimes has the 3.99 box i'll check 'em out, and best buy every week as a 5.99 sale, older dvds but sometimes you come across some good ones and if you get a movie on the dvd release week its usually only 9.99-13.99 @ best buy as well, if its one of those i cant wait til its on sale kindof things.

www.deepdisocuntdvd.com (http://www.deepdisocuntdvd.com) (now simply www.deepdiscount.com (http://www.deepdiscount.com)) has had some pretty good runs. Just this week they had a $5.98 sale and a $6.98 sale still going on on Paramount titles. I repurchased a copy of Army of Darkness, a ritual I have of buying that particluar film and then selling it a few months down the line, as well as a copt of Fried Green Tomatoes.
Amazon.com usually has some great titles used from sellers. Amazon is more reliable because they hold your payment until the item has been shipped and will refund you, in most cases, if you ever have trouble.
WWW.DVDEMPIRE.COM (http://www.DVDEMPIRE.COM) is having a %5.99 sale on a chunk of their Lionsgate titles.
www.half.com (http://www.half.com) is usually pretty good as well. Grabbed a copy of From Dusk Til Dawn Collectors series for under $8 bucks. Plus I grabbed the entire Die Hard trilogy in their special edition forms for under $15. I swear you end up paying a whopping $18 if you buy them in the boxed set, and thats just for the box.
www.secondspin.com (http://www.secondspin.com) get 25% off of your order (no minimum) buy using the code woohoo. They have also had the free shipping option on sales of over $50-$75 bucks.

There is an art to buying DVD's and I know best as I probably have more than 1000 of them.
First you have to keep pricing in mind. Pricing is everything. Most of the time I get the best price from Walmart. They usually price point their movies way below all the others (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc, etc.) I always make sure to check Walmart first. You also have to watch different Walmart Stores because some of them are much cheaper than others depending on the sales that are going on in their particular area. The manager plays a big part in the price too. I personally know one of the managers and I had no idea that they decide the price point for their own store.
The other thing that I like to watch for is Movie Clubs like Columbia House. Most people think I'm insane for joining these clubs but to be honest sometimes you can find great prices on movies when they have big sales. Just as an example I have a copy of Dreamgirls coming on the 1st of May for only 9.18 total. I purchased Departed and The Holiday for 7.96 after the sale price. You wont find those prices anywhere except Ebay maybe.
I like to look at Ebay from time to time. I have gotten great movies from Ebay but you have to watch who you buy from because they will say that the movies are Region 1(USA) and when you get them the cover is in Chinese and that sucks!!
Last but certainly not least is Blockbuster. I have to say that they have really rose to the occassion over the past few years. They offer the online program and give onliners an extra Previously Viewed Movie when they return their online movies in store. This is a great way for movie collectors to gain movies at about $6 bucks per movie. I am antsy so I usually buy new but if there is a movie that I feel I can wait for I will get it used from BBuster and save some big bucks!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

BEST BUY currently has a $24.99 sale on some good series--including PICKET FENCES SEASON 1, FALL GUY SEASON 1, MONK SEASONS 1-4. This sale actually will be for awhile from what I understand.
Yes for us Charlotte folks, I do like CD WAREHOUSE also BUT just don't wait for stuff to go there and think that it will be cheaper because a lot of times it will just be the sale price that it was the week it came out. An example is HEROES--just saw it this week there and it was $40 (same or higher than store sale prices). It doesn't mind that everything does that because I picked up HOUSE SEASON 3 for $35--cheaper than even $39 at BJ's.
I have mentioned it before but for dvds check places like BJ's and Sams.
I have gotten several deals there--such as THE WIRE Season 1 for $23 and the COMPLETE ORIGINAL BATTLESTAR GALATICA SERIES (complete with Cylon cover) for $40.
..and of course always check the Sunday sales inserts.....
