Anyone ever followed this competition? I'm really excited, this will be my first year following Mavericks. I've always been interested in surfing but not in the best location to take it up. However, ever since I finally visited Hawaii last year, I've been reading a lot about surfing and following some competitions. I'm really excited to follow along with Mavericks through the internet...it sounds like one of the truly unique competitions in all of sports.

When I lived in California I surfed all the great beaches from Huntington to Old Man's and the atmosphere was different from shoreline to shoreline. Some places were harsh because you had guys who wanted to own the beach and brought along idiots who caused trouble. Then there were your friendly beaches that were nice to have. The only real rivalry was between surfers and boogie borders but even then it was all in good humored fun. Surf competitions are fun to watch and when you see the crazy surfers in Hawaii or Kawaii that handle the 10-15 foot faces its really amazing that they can balance through but when they do its the greatest thing you will ever see. Of course its an at your own risk event and sometimes the weather idn't that great for spectating but if you can get your hands on some of the footage from those guys you'd be amazed. I'm sure they have some posted on youtube. I'll check it out and see what I can find.

Thanks for the links. I've watched a lot of the surf movies, Step Into Liquid, both Endles Summers, Riding Giants. I could watch that stuff all day long.
I'm really looking forward to watching Mavericks coverage as it goes on this year. I know they're talking about extending the deadline for the competition. I hope they do whatever it takes to get it in.

Last night there was a show on the wather channel (I know, I'm a party animal) on surfing 60 foot waves. Its funny but I used to love to surf but I don't really like watching documentories on the life. The guy says, "Imagine getting hit by a 60 foot wave. It would level a two story building but these guys walk away almost completely unscathed." I'm thinking to myself that this guy is an idiot lol. I guess I'm just a surf snob that way.
