I am rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with a online group of people form LJ. I want to find out other peoples thoughts on the first book in the serise. I just reread the first two chapters. The way my imagination is still captured after the first two chapters years after reading the serise for the first time speaks for its self.
My favorite line from the first two chapters is:
"Borrowed it, Professor Dumbledore, sir"....."Young Sirius Black lent it to me...."
This line is so amazing when you think of how large a role Sirius plays in latter books.
What does everyone else think of this book?

I resisted reading the Harry Potter books for quite awhile after hearing about them. Finally I decided to check out SS from the library, and I fell in love with the world JKR created. I love watching the friendship between Harry, Ron and Hermione develop. My favorite part of the book is when Harry and Ron go to save Hermione from the Mountain Troll, and she lies about why they are all in the bathroom. What a way to being the wonderful friendship of the trio.

I'll be honest and say I do not like the Harry Potter books. I attempted to read the first one but could not get into the story. I just did not find it entertaining. I have seen a few of the movies and they are ok. I guess I just never got into the wizardry craze.

Ok I read the third and fourth chapters today. I feel in love with Hagrid all over again. When he said not to call Albus....ohhhhh I can't type it all, or I will cry again. It is so sad rereading when you know things that happen to the charaters that aren't really happy things.

I have never been a huge Hagrid fan, but I do like him best in SS. I love when he comes and rescues Harry!

I just want to take Harry home and give him some food and a nice place to sleep everytime I read the first few chapters of SS. If you think about it the Dursley are just completely evil for putting a child in a small cupboard, making him do all the chores, barely feeding him, and never giving him any love and attention...this completely a case of child abuse. I just don't understand how Petunia could do this to her own nephew. Poor Harry!

Alright lets see if we can talk about all of the books/chapters before the new book comes out. We have talked about the frist 4 chapters lets talk about the 5th.
Chapter 5: Diagon Alley
I think this is one of the most magical chapters. When Harry arrives he is so over whelmed by the whole experiacne. Just like I would be, wishing I had three heads. And the Goblins are wonderful. Draco acting like a prick already in the robe shop is just great.
What is everyones favorite part of the chapter? Do you like the chapter?

This is a really great chapter in SS because it introduces the reader and Harry to the Wizarding World. I love Harry's interaction with Mr. Ollivander when he is buying his wand.

I love Ollivander. He reminds me of Dumbledore but different.
Now how about chapter 6 The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-quarters:
Well we meet the other two parts of the golden trio. It is so suprising to reread and see how much that have change verse the 6th book and how much they have stayed the same in alot of ways. Fred and George are wonderful helping Harry put his stuff on the train. Ginny is cute wanting to go on the train to meet Harry. And Percy is as Prefect as ever!

I love this chapter because we start meeting other Wizarding kids going to Hogwarts. It is funny how much Harry, and especially, Ron don't like Hermione at first. Who knew when first reaqding this book that these three would form such a wonderful friendship?

I know...Hermione is such a bossy boss on the train. And poor Neville already having problems.
The next Chapter is "The Sorting Hat" Chapter 7:
This is one of the most important chapters I think. If the sorting hat had decided to put Harry in Slytherin or Hermione in Ravenclaw the whole story would be change so much. I think the sorting is a good and bad thing. I mean Susan Bones and Harry Potter might have been best friends if they were in the same house. Or how Harry would have viewed Hogwarts if he was in Slytherin. Would Hogwarts sitll be his 'home'?

Even though I have some real issues with the whole sorting thing, I really did enjoy this chapter. It was interesting to see what the Sorting Hat said to Harry about him being in Slytherin. But I do think that Gryffindor was the right place for Harry...he does has some Slytherin qualities, but he has so many more Gryffindor qualities.

The introduction to Snape in that chapter is awesome. He is so mean to Harry from the get go and poor Harry doesn't even know why.

Chapter Nine: The Midnight Duel
Half of this chapter was cut from the movie. But the half that wasn't cut is my favorite part of the chapter. I love when Harry stands up for Neville, even after Madam Hooch takes him to the hospital wing. Draco is the most pompus assed 11 year old ever!

I love the "midnight duel" part of this chapter. I love Hermione following Ron and Harry and telling them they are going to get expelled. She is just such a little no it all at this point, and it is great.

In this chapter Hermione, Harry and Ron become friends forever after fighting the troll! I love them as the Golden Trio!

This is my very favorite chapter in SS! I love that Hermione takes all the blame for the troll incident. I also love that this moment is the birth of the Trio!

Chapter 11: Quidditch
This chapter is very much a true JK chapter. The kids 'think' they see Snape cursing Harry's broom. Hermione thinks she stopped it with her spell but not really. I love the line ...as she knocked into Professor Qurirrell... it really is so improtant but alot of people missed it on the first read through.

I love the way JKR makes Snape seem guility throughout this book through the trio's misconceptions!

Chapter 12: The Mirror of Erised
This chapter was intresting. The consept of The Mirror of Erised (desire backwards) was very intreging. I think that Harry seeing his whole family means so much. He doesn't just see his mother and father but a whole string of people. I think it shows that he dosen't just desire his parents but any type of family love that he can get. Which comes in book 3 in the form of Sirius Black!

This chapter always gets to me. Thinking of poor Harry sitting for hours looking at his family in the Mirror.

I haven't really heard this rumor. I don't really seeing Harry using the mirror the same way again. I think there will be some much more interesting way to defeat Voldie. I can't wait to find out what it is!

oh i didnt hear that he would use to kill voldemort but that he would use it to help himself find some of the last horcruxes, should've put that i guess
beatletraci
05-03-2007, 07:13 AM
Well that does seem a more reasonably way to use the Mirror. Of course, I take all rumors with a grain of salt because at this point pretty much nobody has seen the book yet.

yea i know, i cant wait to read what happens, see if any of the rumors are true

But wouldn't the Mirror have to have a spell on it for him to be able to find the horcruxes? Wouldn't he just be staring into the mirror for hours if it weren't?

05-07-2007, 12:38 PM
well you know how to get the stone he had to want it but not for himself, i think somehow he'll use the mirror to see where the horcruxes are, not necesarily see them but see maybe the past to show him how to get it, i dont think he'll use it like he did to get the stone but i think its possible and like i said it was just a rumor i heard
