I can't recall if this was a book or amovie but it sounds similar in plot. As a film I don't know how much time you would be able to establish the plot. If i were to do it this is how I would:
Okay. You've got your guy in jail. He's working his way into the other guys confidence slowly. He's done nothing for years but work out so the guy is relatively big compared to his former self before his wife was killed. Not huge but relatively built. One day the killer gets jumped in the yard or in the shower or something, you don't know it yet but the husband set the whole thing up by manipulating some inmates, he's a smart guy. He comes to the rescue and the killer owes him. Occasionally when they show the husband, maybe a night/lights out scene, we get a flashback of the wifes body or the cops at his house as he pulls up. Nothing too obvious, mayeb to throw the audience off only show those flashbacks when ever the conversation is angled at what the husband di to get into jail, make it seem like he killed someone. The killer comes to him and tells him that he is going to bust out of prison and invites the husband. As they work on their plan for a few months the two talk to one another about their lives, the husband is totally pulling a Keyser Soze deal on the killer. When the killer is completely lulled in by the husband they escape. They find their way to a safe house, the cops right behind them. The husband knows this is his only chance. When the killer is preoccupied looking for helicopters and police cars through a window the husband hits him across the back of the head seomthing heavy. The killer goes down. The husband ties the guy up and when he comes to the husband starts to reveal who he is. The flashbacks come in full with thenhusband pulling up to the house and walking inside. The camera is in first person and it pans across his wifes dead body. The scene splits to the police cars in front of his house and them hauling his wifes body away. Then the court scene where our guy is tucked away in the back of the room, completely unshaven, and unkempt. He gets all his information. A few months later he walks out in the court building, pulls a gun out and kills some other criminal he's been following, maybe another rapist or a child molester, something to amp up the audience's bloodlust. Finally the husband starts to beat on the killer and the killer confesses that he wasn't the only one who took part in the murder. Kind of leaves a window open in case you want to go on. In short he kill the guy. Maybe he has a safety deposit box at a nearby bank that has enough money, some fake I.D.s, and essential things for him to dissapear.

I think it is very interesting concept but I don't want the story to be like something I can see on the Lifetime channel. I don't know what you are planning to do with the ending. I cannot decide which possible endings I want to see - succeed in revenge or learn to forgive. IMO, forgiveness is much harder than vengeance. If this is going to be more lesson taught in movies, I want to see the husband forgive the killer. But if this is just action/psycho thriller, I may want to see the husband to kill the bastard. I have to be convinced that the husband was madly in love with his wife to do all that. My next question may be what crime the huband is going to commit to go to the same prison, how the killer became a killer, the killer have any sad and dramatic past in his family history etc.
