The Crow Remake
Just read this article on superhero hype.
Stephen Norrington to Reinvent The Crow Source:Variety December 14, 2008 Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of The Crow, based on the comic created by James O'Barr, says Variety. Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film. Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed adaptation, in which rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. For Norrington, The Crow deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with Blade, Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a feature film since. "Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said. Why does Hollywood feel that good thigns shoudl be messed with. I seriously hope that James O'Barr does not give this approval. Is there anything wrong with the Brandon Lee Version? I think not. |

Re: The Crow Remake
I think there is plenty wrong with the original. I would even go so far as to say The Crow 2 & 3 were probably better then the first. I really hated Lee in his role as Eric Draven. I think its mystique has a lot to do with the first translation of the material, the excellent soundtrack, and the dark imitation style. The acting was complete crap though and even though I've owned it many times I always cringe when I watch it. I can totally see someone taking this and subtracting the mundane dialogue and acting and just putting for a straight forward effort without all the fireworks. Nothing is more frightining and intriguing then something you can't understand interwoven into realism. Proyas, who is a fabulous director, made mistakes. The ariel shots of the city looked cheap, almost like the old HBO intro's (if your old enough to recall them), the dialogue was terrible; anyone recall the scene where Skank crashes into another car and the guy gets out and what does he call Skank...."You stupid asshair." WTF??? It sounded so dubbed. Lee was totally unable to pull off the whole indestructable thing, also probably had a lot to do with the writing, where his character is just over cocky, especially hate when Tin Tin punches him in the face in the alley and he kind of bobbles his head. Christ that part eerks me so badly. Can't be any worse. Hell they totally overexploited the franchise, even Edward urlong got to be an incarnation of the Crow. Definilty can't get any worse.

Re: The Crow Remake
The Crow is an integral part of me and my coming of age. But I read the comic before I saw the movie. I had a HUGE crush on Brandon Lee but I'll agree with Garcia his acting left much to be desired. I'm worried about this remake. I didn't much care for either Blade or the League so I'm not sure I like Norrington's style of film. I'll have to look into any other movies he's made.
IMO removing the darkness is a mistake. The whole point of the book is that what Draven is doing is wrong but also right. He has to become one of them in order to deliver vengance. He is born of pain and sorrow and anger. I'm not sure you can express that in a documentary style film. Sometimes we, as an audience, have to be spoon fed the emotions. I mean Batman just wouldn't be Batman if he was "real." I'll still watch it when/if it comes out. I really love the story Obarr painted. To rejeivenate it is a good thing. Now if I hear Obarr won't see a penny for this then I will be hoppin mad and will not see it.

Re: The Crow Remake
He did a good job with his other films, I'm not ready for ANYONE to remake The Crow. Lol, but I'll be the first in line to see it.

Re: The Crow Remake
So what their going for, as I have read today, is less kung fu fighting, less super power-like draven, and more just a plain old pychotic. Me likey. I'd like to see The Crow reborn as as Rorschac like character just bult out of real anger, not trying to be cool or cocky, just out to kick some ass and take some names rules be damned.
