Christian Bale is to join Johnny Depp and Billy Crudup in director Michael Mann’s Depression-era crime drama, “Public Enemies."


The Batman Begins hunk will take on the role of Melvin Purvis, who led the FBI’s manhunt for Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history. It was Purvis who uttered, “Stick ‘em up, Johnny” when he confronted Dillinger outside Chicago’s Biograph Theatre in 1934, moments before the gangster was shot dead by FBI agents.


The Universal Pictures project follows the government’s attempt to capture
notorious criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Depp is set to play Dillinger of course. Crudup has been cast as divisive former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. "La Vie en Rose" actress Marion Cotillard is confirmed for the role of Dillinger's lover, Billie Frechette. The script is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43.”

In terms of cinematography, I think that this film is going to be weird. From the trailer, it looks like Michale Mann's regular style. The weird thing is that I've never seen a period piece with that style. It should be interesting.

Also, the cast looks pretty good. Any chance to see Johnny Depp acting in a film that's not directed by Tim Burton is good. (Don't get me wrong I love Tim Burton but he needs to diversify)

Hope this is going to be a good gangster/crime noir film. BTW, I think Johnny Depp ages so well! He looks better as he ages.

I saw the previews in the theatre. I love Johnny Depp. He can play any character/part in the movies. I am looking forward to see Public Enemies.

So looking forward to this one. I love period crime drama's. Cast looks decent and the film looks pretty clean.

I like the pace of Michael Mann movies.Slow for most people but if you have a great story and script why rush it.I look forward to the most X-cellent staff of SF to perhaps have a screening

Good movie - but Johnny Depp is a little unbelievable as Dillinger and so is Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis. Anyone know how accurate the details of the movie are? Addendum: Someone asked me which I liked better. This movie or the Warren Oates Dillinger - Think I liked the latter better
