The Information is seeing Beck at his best. A subtle mix between the garage rock of his early days and the translucent offbeat alt-weird of his later days. An apparent new found love of Beck’s is the cowbell and the strong bass lines reminiscent of Eels. The Information is not only catchier and a bit poppier than his previous efforts but it is more relatable as well and, with that, a much better album.
Beck is seen honing his odd craft here and it came none too soon. As mainstream music is starting to blend together in an emo-infested pool, it is a relief to hear someone release music that is truly their own. There is no over-the-top sad lyrics, no feeble attempts at goth punk. Just, the same nerdy guy doing his own brand of nerd-rock, and we couldn’t be happier for it.
