In the liner notes for Dewa Budjana’s Surya Namaskar you read about Jazz music through the ages. Back in the day Miles Davis would put out five or six albums a year due to the high demand for Jazz recordings. Through the years major record labels have opted to produce maybe one or two Jazz albums per artists, per year, due to a decline in interest (they would probably state). It’s an interesting concept, and one that really makes you appreciate what’s being on this new album.

The first track right out of the gates, Fifty w/ Gary Husband, is an abstract rock/jazz tune that seems all over the place. Bass seems to have a direct route through the track but the rest of the band is off in their own world, improvising and rocking out while maintaining this façade of control amongst the chaos. At the end of the song there is some dialogue between the band which is classic.

The album takes on all sorts of shapes as far as the direction the music goes in, a sure sign that all is right in the mix. You’re taken on journey’s across a vast Asian desert oasis, a mystical fantasy land, basically wherever your mind takes you. The album is what it is and the music takes no real shape or form, just guides you into your own minds eye as you take what you will form the experience.

The only song that was a bit tough to translate would have to be Fifty, but the rest of the album seems to have a smooth run that offers up a well produced sound that is captured well on the album. Bass, for whatever reason, seemed to stand out to me the most. Guitars are mesmerizing, often times you get lost in the strange or rhythmic sounds that are produced form the artists, and drums are perfectly inserted into the soundscape so that can either be ignored or worshipped. I really liked the diversity of the styles there. All in all, a great album that I’m glad found a home and the opportunity to travel. Well worth checking out.
