Running Time:

Fanboys isn’t a perfect movie, but it sure is a fun one…at least if you’re a Star Wars fan. It’s your basic buddy road trip flick, but with a heavy dose of geek awesomeness. Here’s the lowdown: four Star Wars nerds are counting down the days to the premiere of The Phantom Menace (back in 1999…has it already been 10 years already??), but life decides to get in the way. One of them has terminal cancer, adding a certain element of crisis.

So in the name of nerdy brotherhood, they decide to put a wacky plan into action: travel across the country and break into Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California. Of course, along they way they run into gay bikers, Trekkie gangs, William Shatner and Vegas escorts. Again, it all comes with a heavy dose of Star Wars references and in-jokes.

And it’s that central theme that will probably make or break the film for most people. If you love Star Wars, you’ll eat this up, cameos and all. If not, most of this will probably leave you cold. The cast is fantastic, but unless you’re an Undeclared or Veronica Mars fan, chances are good you won’t be checking this out for Jay Baruchel or Kristen Bell (awesome though they may be). Guys like Seth Rogen and Danny McBride pop up in terrific scenes, but they’re not the focal point here.

This is essentially a love-letter to Star Wars fandom, at least before Lucas started trampling on good credit that he began earning back in 1977. It’s hilarious and goofy, and ultimately a lot of fun.
