No doubt to capitalize on the upcoming I, Frankenstein film, Lionsgate recently released a History Channel compilation entitled Frankenstein: The Real Story. The cover makes it seem like this is an intended collection, but the DVD actually contains three different specials produced by the network between 1995 and 2008 respectively. Although the programs do feel a tad dated, viewers with an interest in the macabre or the paranormal should still find plenty of entertainment value.

Up first is 2008's “In Search of the Real Frankenstein.” This feature focuses mainly on what actual events might have inspired Mary Shelley's classic novel and includes information on figures like Luigi Galvani, Giovanni Aldini, and Konrad Dippel. Next comes 1997's “Frankenstein” which is a more factual look at Shelley's life revolving around her upbringing, the world of science at the time, and her husband Percy. The highlight of the release, 1995's “It's Alive! The True Story of Frankenstein” covers all adaptations of the classic novel from Universal's acclaimed horror films to television sitcom The Munsters to comedy legend Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein.

Surprisingly, the near 20 year old program is by far the most entertaining of the bunch. At twice the length of the other specials, “It's Alive! The True Story of Frankenstein” has a wealth of information on the history of the monster on the written page, stage, and screen. The other features are well produced, but they simply just aren't as fun - particularly the 2008 program that contains a large amount of speculation regarding experimentation. Not Ancient Aliens sort of speculation, but you get the drift. No special features are included outside of a few History Channel promos and, shockingly, a trailer for I, Frankenstein. Paranormal fans with a love of Shelley's original classic will want to add this compilation to their collection. Anything that can draw Gene Wilder out of hiding is ok in my book. Recommended.
