The complete season 4 of Laverne & Shirley comes with four DVDs, containing 23 episodes. The friendship between Laverne (Penny Marshall) and Shirley (Cindy Williams), and their relationships with friends, families and numerous boyfriends successfully combine serious issues and humor.

Both Laverne and Shirley are outspoken, feisty and liberated, and as in previous seasons, they continue to date men that range form dumb and weird to likable. In Season 4 the girls find themselves participating in a game show and attending a night school. Some episodes are quite funny, but others are predictable and ordinary. The season opener “Festival” part 1 and 2 are not only un-funny but also annoying, and I had to roll my eyes several times. The guest appearances by young Jay Leno in “The Feminine Mistake” and Toni Basil (she plays a choreographer named Mickie) in “Chorus Line” are pleasant surprises, and add the nostalgia appeal.

Just like the third season DVD set, the fourth season set comes with no extra material, no outtakes, no commentary and no interviews. It would be especially fascinating to hear what Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams have to say about the show from today’s perspective.

As far as the comedy goes, some episodes are relatively weak, however, chemistry between Marshall and Williams, heart-warming moments and wacky co-stars (Lenny and Squiggy) make up for some of the so-so episodes. If you are a big fan of TV Land or Nick at Nite, I guarantee that this show will take you back in time, and you can watch this series with the whole family.
