This album was written and created while Kylee Swenson Gordon (singer/guitarist) was pregnant.
Loquat started writing songs in 1996, but the band was never officially formed until 2001. They are from San Francisco, California and “We could be Arsonist” is their 3rd full length album release. Their songs have been featured on numerous TV shows and they have an established fan base. They have performed at SXSW and they have also shared the stage with The Cardigans, Goldfrapp, and Liz Phair. Their sound has been described as indie, nostalgic, melodic, and dancy.
This album was well thought out and properly assembled. I have never heard of Loquat, but after listening to “We could be Arsonist” I am a huge fan. They have catchy melodies, impressive instrumentals, thoughtful lyrics and soothing vocals with great range to complete the package. Whether the songs were slower and emotionally deep or more upbeat and dancy, Loquat perfected each and every song on this album. My favorite song on the whole album was “The Legion” because Loquat took me to a whole different universe. If I would have known about Loquat earlier, while I was still living in San Francisco, I would have wanted to see them perform live in a heartbeat.
I highly recommend this album to everyone. They did a great job of perfectly mixing so many different genres of music to come up with a sound of their own. They are as emotional as Florence and the Machine and have an indie vibe like The Pixies, but there is so much more to Loquat that can’t be easily described. You are going to have to listen to this CD for yourself to see what I am talking about. For those reasons, I am giving this album an “A.”
