Seconds into The Devil Made Me Do It by Scum of the Earth was that it sounded very familiar. Before the first song, “Born Again Masochist” was over I was sure that Scum of the Earth was sounding exactly like White Zombie. Well, I was wrong because 2 members of White Zombie formed Scum of the Earth, now only one of those 2 remain, Mike Riggs, the songs still have a similar sound to White Zombie. Not that it’s a bad thing because the songs are played very well, with that extreme level of energy that makes you want to drive 150mph with the top down and you passenger standing up screaming the whole ride.
One of the reasons that this intense death core/heavy metal music works is the percussion beat the songs have. Most of the songs keep a same beat tempo but it’s this underlying beat that almost sounds like a heartbeat. These percussions give the songs life with this intense, high energy, adrenaline flowing song that blends into a sound that makes you want to move. Though Scum of the Earth has added some different sounds to their songs in this album that was surprisingly good. There’s almost a slight hint of electronic being played in the songs, which gives the songs a sound of a dance club, granted a dance club that will have more fighting than dancing but still some dancing.
Even the vocals are well sung with a good mixture of the grunting singsong to the screaming, Mike Riggs does a good job at making the vocals enjoyable to listen to. There’s also understandable, well more so than I would have figured they would be, and what I did understand wasn’t shocking. Most of the songs lyrics focus on things likes zombies, death, the devil, and more zombies. Which I think if a song about zombies is going to be done it should be performed as Scum of the Earth is doing it, fast, intense, strong beats, guitars, drums, electronics, and sounds I couldn’t place all blending together to form blood pumping songs. I really enjoyed this album, it might not have the prettiest album cover, but the contents inside will beat away any boring day you might be having and give you some energy for the rest of your day.
