Secret Colours is a Chicago pop-rock band that has been together since 2009. Their musical influences include Oasis and Blur. They have already performed at SXSW, but they will also be performing at Austin Psych Fest. In addition they will be releasing their third album, “Positive Distraction” on April 29, 2014. Shakefire had a chance to review their new album before its public release date.

Secret Colours’ musical sound can be described as 60’s vintage rock music infused with 90’s British pop. It is a very unique formula that works well for the band and sets them apart from the million other bands out there today. “Positive Distraction” has a great feel and each of the songs has good lyrics and catchy tunes. The only issue I had with the album was that each of the instrumentals on all the songs only had slight variations. The lyrics and the vocals were nicely varied, but the tunes were redundant after a while. Other than that, this was a very well-constructed album from a band with a lot of potential.

For the most part, Secret Colours got most of the elements on this album just right and even perfected. However, some variations or more uptempo songs or even some ballads would have been a nice change of pace for the band. They should experiment a bit more on their next album and show all the different sides of the band. However, I still think you should listen to the album and judge for yourself. For those reasons, I am giving “Positive Distraction” a “B.”
