Jordan Christy’s latest book is like getting both helpful and ridiculous advice from a big sister, who has apparently been there and done that. Despite of the title, I would not seriously consider this as a self-help book. For example, there is nothing that I have not come across before in her “Top Ten Ways To Get Hired”. However, perhaps for girls who just graduated high school these are not obvious or common knowledge. Also, does anyone really have no clue how to get fired? The “Top Ten Ways To Get Fired” seems to be pointless because you probably don’t really need a list of such “wisdom”.
Since the author is a publicist for Warner Bros., she shares not only her own experience growing up as a girl, a single woman and a professional woman, but also the private conversations that she had with celebrities like James Marsden, Ryan Gosling, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. While her personal stories are quite intriguing, Christy could not resist showing off her Hollywood knowledge. Julia Roberts was a Cold Stone Creamery server before she hit big (wow, really? I did not know that Cold Stone was already in business when she was still unknown…). Although I can see her point of making her “everyone has to start somewhere” theory here, too many celebrity names are referred throughout the book. Today’s society is already bombarded with TV shows, movies and fashion/gossip magazines; therefore, I would rather read about real people and their real stories. Additionally, I also could not care less about her recommending certain makeup/skin care products; she is often very specific about them. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a Teen Vogue.
Although I highly doubt that this book will make any girl an IT girl instantly, what I like about the book is that there are smart and encouraging quotes and guidance. One of them is “What’s popular is not always right, and what’s right is not always popular”. Without any doubt, Christy is a good communicator, and she clearly knows her target readers. Her writing is simple yet very effective to get her messages and points across. Hence, any reader will have no problem following How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World.
This is a book that will make you smile, but at the same time it will also make you scratch your head and roll your eyes. It is definitely targeted to a young female demographic or other regular fashion magazine readers with a good sense of humor. I’m not in her target audience, but I may still try one of the quick and easy recipes featured in this book.
