Bear McCreary, a name you might not be familiar with, but absolutely a composer whose works you will have heard. McCreary is better known for his work here with the newly imagined Battlestar Galactica series which was given new life by SyFy (then Sci-Fi) but he ahs also worked on SyFy’s Eureka as well as Fox’s, now terminated, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Soundtrack)  which was equally as enjoyable a CD as BSG is here. If you haven’t given much thought to the shows soundtrack I would highly suggest picking this OST up.

The first track on the album, Apocalypse (Theme from The Plan) says it all about McCreary’s direction. The ominous vocals of Raya Yarbrough and the epic metal sound of McCreary’s guitars coming hard and loud with the boom of drums, the suspiciously low sleek sound of the bass adding a darker edge to the whole thing, its enough to put goosebumps and up and down the expanse of your entire body, seriously. I could listen to that one track a thousand times and still find it exceptionally beautiful and telling in an illustrative manner, of what just might be occurring. A true purveyor of mental cinema that track is. But you would be crazy to listen to that one track alone as the entire album, is in fact, bits and pieces of related emotions given life by McCreary. If you’ve never seen the show it doesn’t matter as the music is haunting and complex and impressive and to be admired for being entities all on their own. Sounds corny as hell but believe me you will be amazed. McCreary gives each track a deep resonating sound overlaid by a soft whimsical tone pulled across whatever it is the show needs conveyed.

The liner notes contain information on McCreary’s progress through the show soundtrack giving you an insiders look at why certain songs sound the way they do as well as where their origins come from. You get full color photo’s as well as the usual information on the production team and performers. As a bonus you get a live version of Apocalypse (Theme from the Plan) as performed by The Battlestar Galactica Orchestra. Not as great sounding as the album version but cool just the same.
