Artist: Calloway Album: Chasin The Sun Members: Susan Calloway, Greg Suran, Tony Levin, Lee Levin Genre: Rock Label: Blue Jude Records Tracks: 6 Type: LP Release Date: September 21, 2009 Discs: 1 Rating: () Grade: C Its not Cab Calloway or even the late 80’s Midnight Star spin Off Calloway. Its singer/songwriter Susan Calloway’s first record since leaving the popular independent act Red C. Mixing pop sensibilities with top 40 country style singing and songwriting Calloway attempts to offer up inspiration and humble guidance on the 6 track debut with singles success potential. By my second listen to Calloway’s Chasin the Sun I was convinced I need not explore the album again. Calloway’s delivery and writing is like all well intentioned pop artists; think Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Cher. In its own way its pretty and positive but lacking in substance and staying power. The songwriting is vague and so inner reflected that it becomes impersonal to anyone else. When an album is wholly reliant on vocals and lyrical delivery the artist needs to be able to connect, somehow, in a way that is universal. My only thought on a universal scheme here was of a mixed group of people waiting for their floor inside of an elevator. Musically the album sounds like any contemporary artist without flair or personality making its mark only in the fact that that it is in fact contemporary and safe and meant to provoke positive vibes. Lay It Down is probably the most stand out-ish track on the album for some reason sounding incredibly familiar to me for some reason. The song least likely to land on my Ipod was Learning To live with it monotonous chorus that grows old very quick. Again, as a general contemporary title its music that can be ignored without becoming annoying in a background sense but I have very little faith in the albums ability to rush Calloway to the top of the billboard charts. As always final judgment is yours and do be sure to check out more on Calloway at the following links. Enjoy. Pictures/Covers: |
