Artist: Neil Sedaka Album: Waking Up Is Hard To Do Members: Neil Sedaka Genre: Kids Label: Razor & Tie Tracks: 11 Type: LP Release Date: January 6, 2009 Discs: 1 Rating: () Grade: B- Sedaka’s first children’s album finds him revamping some of his hits for kids. While this isn’t like a Kidz Bop type deal, Sedaka is mostly in charge of the vocals and obviously his own instrument work, there are a few songs that trail off or begin with kids taking the chorus up with Sedaka. It’s a well put together album if not just a little outdated sounding. My two younger children listened to this CD while they did their homework and on a few songs they joined in once they had caught on to the chorus, even found some of the lyrics quite funny (Lunch Will Keep Us Together), but to me it sounded a bit off. Sure Sedaka performs well but his ability to transition his sound to accommodate the younger crowd seems strained, almost as if he is refusing to bring his source material down just a bit for humor sake. That might be the albums only real downfall. Like I said, its enjoyable, and the word play on the album is funny in some aspects. I am actually grateful Razor & Tie (the label responsible for the Kidz Bop Catalogue) did in fact back away from the mostly dominate kid singing platform that has made their Kidz Bop franchise a success. Eleven tracks in total will make for an occasional spin but this album could have been better and more kid friendly. Think Sesame Street, only more serious. 1. Waking Up Is Hard To Do |
