Artist: The Smithereens Album: B-Sides the Beatles Genre: Rock Label: Koch Tracks: 12 Type: LP Release Date: September 2, 2008 Rating: () Grade: A- In this day and age when everything is a remake of a remake sometimes something as fine as "The Smithereens B-Sides - The Beatles" comes about and proves that sometimes, given a fine production and great quality, even a remake in this time of remakes can be something to cheer about. The Smithereens, for what it’s worth, have always been a fine working class band. A few of you might recognize their music but a lot of you won’t. Despite being a steady rock band whose quality has mostly been perfection the band never reached the peak some of their peers have. Think Elvis Costello and the likes. Still most people will look at this Beatles cover album and judge it harshly based on the fact that at least 80% of the world know and love the Beatles but fans and non-fans alike will find that this is one enjoyable album, probably far better than their earlier album Meet The Smithereens, yet another Beatles cover album. The bands harmony is right on and even though they don’t emanate or imitate The Beatles as much as some think they should for covering the band they really make the songs their own diversifying their sound with the simplicity of early Beatles rock to rockabilly. Again, this album will get pulled through the ringer by harsh criticisms due to the material but you can take it from me that this album is all about the fun of simply making a good rock album and playing music because you love to. Absolutely a must own. Pictures/Covers: |
