There are several suspects from a plastic surgeon, to a fitness trainer, to a politician. Each path she goes down seems to open more questions. Working with Dan O’Reilly, FBI agent and her boyfriend adds in even more challenges as Melanie tries to find a balance between work and her private life. One thing is for sure though the closer she gets to the killer the more dangerous things become.
”Cover-Up” starts off right away with a dead body, which I was glad too many books try to set up too much before getting right into it. Then it takes on almost a real time feel as you follow Melanie Vargas to every interview, court session, as she views her emails, returns to her home, and plans out her next move. You are really included in almost every little detail of the case. Now for some books this could really cause a great deal of down time; but for this one it works. You really feel that you are involved in an episode of CSI or something than a story and being included for the whole journey gives you time to try and put things together yourself.
”Cover-Up” was also a pretty quick read for me. I was able to finish it in a day because I got sucked into the story. So if you chose books and read only a little each night be prepared to maybe read a little longer than expecting every night until you are through. While the crime and clues are involved, thought out, and placed throughout the story carefully the romance is not. It is nice to have a romantic interest in stories like this; but at times it felt more like a wannabe “Harlequin” novel with its gratuitous sex than the murder mystery it set out to be. Luckily though this is kept to a minimum and is easily forgotten by the next page. About the only other negative thing I could find about “Cover-Up” could perhaps be seen with the ending. (I’m not going to give anything away here) After reading a book packed with so much detail, suspects, characters, and clues I was let down with how quickly things were wrapped up and just how little energy there seemed to be at the end. Still though quite a decent read for this genre.
