Title: Into the Abyss Genre: Documentary, Drama Starring: Werner Herzog, Michael Perry, fred allen, jason burkett, melyssa burkett, jeremy richardson, adam stotler, sandra stotler, kristen willis Director: Werner Herzog Runtime: 107 Minutes Release Date: April 10, 2012 Format: BLU-RAY Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B This film follows a horrific incident that takes place in Texas dealing with a group of kids over 10 years ago. The incidence turned out to be really devastating. One of the boys in a group of friends received a new Camaro. His friends turned out to be jealous of the car. So the other boys plot and plan to steal the car. When the boys go to steal the car from their friend’s house, he’s not home but his mom is home instead. Now the boys end up killing their friends’ mom just to steal this new Camaro they apparently had to have so badly. The movie than goes on to explain how the facts unfold about the murder of this boy’s mom; ending in all of the boys going to jail and being put on death row. Except one; he received life in prison. At first, you think the movie is about the incidence of the boy killing the mom. But the movie was really about how people are affected by the death penalty laws in Texas. The key: no one should have the right to be killed by the death penalty; as humans, we shouldn’t have the right to kill others no matter what they have done. Even one of the executioners of the Texas prison had a chance to tell his story. The executioner who had a major role in killing one of the original teens had an epiphany one day after executing a woman. The woman simply said before she died, “Thank you for all you’ve done.” After that the guard had to quit his job and even forfeit his pension because his conscious started to get at him for killing some many inmates while working at the prison. This film was very well written and directed. The points of views seen in the movie are set up documentary-style. Each character, whether victim or convict, had a chance to speak their point of view. The entire film is about life and death and how when someone has the power to kill someone in the prison system, it affects so many others. |
