Factoid:

Before the band reformed in their original line up Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea stepped in for Eric Avery.

The first thing my wife says to me when I tear open my review package and start pursuing Jane’s Addiction Live Voodoo on Blu-Ray is that things aren’t always as great as we remember them. I’d watched a live stream of one of their concerts when they reformed for Kettle Whistle and I just remember being blown away. How could this release possibly be bad? As I navigated the menu to select my sound option, selecting the DTS HD Master Audio, I grew more anxious. I select play and the show begins. As the camera rolls I’m just astounded by the picture. This is as close as your going to get to actually being there. Then Perry Ferrell arrives and, well, I’m not sure. He sounded as if he was struggling with his vocals, extremely quiet on delivery, struggling when his tone raised. Maybe he was loaded, maybe he’d just burnt out his voice, maybe he was tired. In any case the concert, despite how fantastic it looked, was marred somewhat by Ferrell’s inconsistency on vocals.

QUALITY:
One of the finest BD transfers I’ve ever seen for a concert. You can see every detail in Dave Navarro’s tattoo’s, every sequence in Perry Ferrell’s odd outfit, every face in the crowd in detail. Color was perfect, black and white ratio balance was perfect, even the crappy lights on stage and the smoke machine filling the air with reflective smoke didn’t make the slightest blemish in the picture. It honestly looked as if you could step through your TV and find yourself on stage. The DTS Master Audio Sound was great. There is nothing better then having an excellent quality soundtrack to display a great bands sound, even if their lead singer is a bit off, and there was great balance between the music and the crowd being separated by front and back speakers. It may not be the best performance your ever going to find of Jane’s Addiction but it is the best looking and best sounding your ever going to find and the band plays it like a best of hits collection.

BONUS FEATURES:
*Bonus Live Tracks: 1% and Ocean Size
*NME Featurette
*Photo Gallery
*DTS HD MASTER Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1, LPCM 2.0
*Booklet with photo's and an article by MTV host Matt Pinfield.

All decent bonus features but a little short aside from the two added song performances. I would highly suggest for BD purists. As far as I’m concerned this has set the standard for the way live concerts should look on BD. Enjoy.
