Title: Juan Of The Dead Starring: Alexis Diaz De Villegas Director: Alejandro Brugués Studio: Entertainment One Runtime: 100 minutes Release Date: August 14, 2012 Format: DVD Discs: 1 MPAA Rating: Rating: ( )Grade: B- If Shaun Of The Dead is a comedic look at how the everyman might approach the zombie apocalypse, then Juan Of The Dead is a comedic look at how someone a little less savory might handle things. Juan is just a guy trying to get by. He'd like to get to know his daughter better now that she's back in town from Spain. He and his best friend go fishing. He's sometimes sleeping with a neighbor's beautiful wife. And perhaps he might do a little stealing and scamming to make ends meet. So when the dead begin to walk and all of Cuba starts to succumb, he comes up with the perfect plan: Juan Of The Dead, just call and they'll come eliminate your zombies, for a small fee, of course. Together his collection of friends and family, Juan tackles the zombie apocalypse with surprising calm. The movie is well put together, funny, and even politically poignant - the government is heard throughout the film referring to the undead merely "dissidents" and constantly requesting that people ignore them and simply go on about their usual day. I liked this film a lot, my only complaint that with it being a Spanish language film with English subtitles the subtitles were occasionally not entirely coherant as things were lost in translation and in some scenes with people arguing that text flew by so fast as to be nearly unreadable, but then that is par for the course in many foreign films. Over all, however, it is a solidly enjoyable film that I'll probably watch again. |
