Title: Monopoly Star Trek: Continuum Edition Genre: Board Games Publisher: Monopoly Players: 2-6 Time to Finish: 60 minutes plus Rating: () Grade: B+ I typically hate Monopoly, for some reason I have always been cursed at that game. I have never won, and it really gets under my skin as so much of it is based on luck. But as the fates would have it I have finally found a Monopoly I can win and won every single time (which ironically enough there is nothing changed about game play, just the theme). To review this game I sat down and played it four different times with friends and family. It is in every way your standard monopoly game if that is how you choose to play. Obviously though the locations (Park Place, Boardwalk, etc) have been changed to locations in used in “Star Trek” like Vulcan, Romulus, and United Federation Of Planets Headquarters. You now draw Sensor Readings and Subspace Transmission cards which are also themed towards events that happened in various “Star Trek” tales. And you can also choose to play with one of six pewter figures: Captains Chair, Harp, Phaser, Shuttlecraft, Klingon blood wine goblet, and communicator. If you want to change the game play up some they have included optional “Star Trek” rules giving you the opportunity to fire photon torpedoes, draw extra cards, attack other players to take their property, or use a temporal rift. There are a few things though that I thought were a little odd that they did not change. On all land deeds it has prices to buy starship or a fleet instead of houses and hotels. But you are still stuck with the same house & hotel plastic pieces. Not sure if they could have created such pieces that would have not only looked right but fit on the board too; but it is just something that would have been a nice additional touch. Also they kept the Free Parking & Go To Jail spaces. Surely there could have been something better they could have named these. Now here is where I’m sure some people may be shocked; but I was never a huge fan of “Star Trek”. I did see many episodes of “Next Generation” as my Dad is a huge fan; but those few that I did see were not enough for me to fully get everything about this game. Meaning that a lot of the references, locations, and battles I had no clue what they were talking about but was still able to understand what I had to pay or what I won. However it was a lot of fun trying to sound out some of the words. Also want to mention that if you saw the new movie & loved it there is nothing from that in this game. To truly appreciate what all was included I do think it would be best for fans not just the occasional viewer. NOTE: As with all monopoly games I have played there are not enough houses & motels included. As my luck with dice changed with playing this game I had to use some of the other game pieces and turning houses certain ways to signify that it was a hotel instead. |

good review
I've probably only won about 15% of the times I've played any monopoly game, usually losing to my younger brother for some reason.
There are so many different monopoly games out there I didn't even realize that a Star Trek one came out. All of the different monopoly games I've played through out my life all still have the same jail and free parking spots, maybe they want you to understand that you're still playing the same game even though it has a different skin over it, I really don't understand it myself.
I too always wondered why they never gave you enough houses and hotels, that was probably the major reason for my downfall in most play-throughs.
