The gameplay is pretty much what it always has been: press the color button, strum, work your way up as your band tours, earn cash, beat the game. And like the other releases the songs span several genres; but many are the actual bands not just made famous by. Punk: Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys. Metal: Metallica, Slayer, Classic Rock: Cream, The Rolling Stones, Newer Bands: Muse, The Strokes, and tons more. You also can still shop to buy characters, clothes, guitars, songs, & videos (I was looking forward to the Sex Pistols one but it was really short).
Now for some changes. Several of the characters are gone, including Pandora which pissed me off. There are a few new ones though. Next is in career mode. As you make your way up from garage band to rock god there are a few people that are standing in your way. You will have to battle them to prove your talent. There is Tom Morello, Slash, and Lou (the devil). In battle mode it is a little different, while you are trying to complete the song you are also give special notes streaks (similar to star power). These are your attacks. You will have to make the person you are battling fail the song before the end. And they can attack you back. Oh and check out CO-OP mode to open more songs. Use your friend or go online to play this function.
I didn’t mind the battle modes, and can even deal with the loss of Pandora; but there are a few complaints that I just can not look past. First being the songs you play in battle mode you will not be able to play normal. For me this sucks, maybe I do want to try my luck at “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”, the complete song without having my strings cut. And finally the damn wireless controller. When I first starting playing of course there were some notes that I thought I hit that the game made me miss. So I thought “Alright, maybe I’m just being too touchy. I probably missed them”. But when I tilted my guitar up and my star power didn’t kick in I started to think maybe it wasn’t all in my head. It was when I tilted my guitar up, shook it, put it back down & raised it up over & over and nothing happened while I started missing notes attempting to figure out what would get it to work that I KNEW it wasn’t all on me. I’m sorry but the game isn’t more challenging when you have to fight with the controller it is just annoying.
So do I like Guitar Hero 3? Yes. I played it so much that I beat it in one nite. But I do feel like there are still some glitches that they needed to work out before rushing the release (from the wireless controller, to losing sound while playing, to jumpy screen). I kind of think that based on the price I got ripped-off a little bit, but at the same time it took me a couple of days to write this review because my left-hand is claw like from playing so much. Just go in aware that there are some glitches and everything will be just fine.
