Most famous for his role in the British version of The Office, Randy Gervais gets his lead film debut with Ghost Town, a comedy about dead people who are still left on Earth with unfinished business.  After and routine procedure goes wrong, Bertram Pincus (Gervais) is brought back to life and gains the ability to communicate with the dead who still roam the streets of New York. Now being pestered by Frank (Greg Kinnear) to help him stop his wife Gwen (Tea Leoni) from marrying the wrong guy, Pincus unintentionally falls in love with her. This film is a story about love and how it’s never too late to change for those you care about.

Now, I attempted to watch The Office but couldn’t finish the first episode due to it’s rather dry British comedy so I was hesitant to find out if this was going to be the same or not. Fortunately, Gervais does an excellent job at making the audience laugh. The film is full of awkward little moments where he will continue to spout whatever comes to mind. This is for about the first half of the film. Surprisingly, things get serious and the entire tone gets deeper and more emotional. Usually I dislike serious comedies but this one is an exception. The development of Pincus over the course of the film, from a lewd and disgusting ass to a caring and thoughtful person, brings out the best of everyone. You get the sense of despair in him and you want things to work out for him and Gwen in the end. Kinnear, with his off and on New York accent, does a decent job as well. He is funny at times but I saw him as that annoying little fly that keeps buzzing in your ear. You can never seem to get rid of it and that’s how he is to Pincus.

Ghost Town is like comedic and less scary version of The Sixth Sense. The humor is excellent with well placed jokes and none of that stupid stuff you see in many of today’s films. Oh and the way they did the music for the film was different too. Rather than simply play music during a scene, they would incorporate it into the movie. I thought it was unique and much more interesting. This is definitely worth watching with is serious tones and quirky style of comedy; I highly recommend it.
