Books lead us into worlds filled with fantasy, drama, horror, comedy, and everything in between. Inkheart contains a little bit of all of these wrapped around the tale of Mortimer "Mo" Folchart and his gift of being able to read books into real life.

Mo and his daughter, Meggie, love books. They spend their days in looking at all types of books, even travelling across the globe in search of them. Mo is looking for one particular book however. Gifted with the ability to read books alive, Mo unknowingly read the villain Capricorn and his minions out of the story Inkheart years ago. His wife, Resa, disappeared into the fantasy world of the novel and he searches the world to find a copy of the book and reunite with his wife once again.

Filled with action, comedy, and romance; there is something here for everyone. Many of our beloved childhood tales are brought to life such as flying monkeys, unicorns, and other fairy tale creatures. Visually, the film is beautiful. There are many vast landscape shots and they come off as quite spectacular.

Brendan Fraser is his usual adventure seeking self as we have seen in The Mummy franchise. For a film staring him, he doesn't get as much screen time as one would expect. The focus is more on the other fantasy characters including Dustfinger, a fire dancer played by Paul Bettany. He does an excellent job at portraying the character, with his desire to return to Inkheart and be reunited with his family. The other characters, including Meggie and Capricorn, are alright but came off as trite at some points.

The story is decent. At times it is very predictable and even questionable. Why would you summon a shadow at night? It is also perhaps too cutesy. Everything gets wrapped up in a neat little package and you aren't left wanting more. There are two more books in the Inkheart series so we know the story doesn't end there. This one is definitely more for the kids. Still, it is worth seeing in theaters. The cast is excellent and if you enjoy a good book or two then you'll probably enjoy this.
