Title: Mamma Mia! Genre: Musical Starring: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters Director: Phyllida Lloyd Studio: Universal Runtime: 1 Hour, 48 Minutes In Theatres: July 18, 2008 MPAA Rating: Rating: () Grade: A Despite her marriage looming only days away Sophie still has this empty feeling inside and she’s pretty sure she knows why, she doesn’t know who he father is. After reading her mothers diary she thinks she may have figured it out. Now the only problem is getting the three men she’s narrowed it down to, to come to her wedding, get them on the villa on the island, hide them from her mother, and let them know that one of them is potentially her father. Not such an easy plan. Mamma Mia! is an enjoyable film and despite the fact director Phyllida Lloyd has only one other project under her resume, a made for TV film in 2000, she manages to do an excellent job with the film. There was an equal balance of character progression that offered up some great comedic moments and some touching ones as well and the choreography and singing on most of the numbers was great. I thought they muddled up the beginning of Dancing Queen, probably the only ABBA song I know, but it evened out towards the end. The worst of the film has to have been the Pierce Brosnan numbers. His voice was off key and unenthusiastic. Definitely could have given his part to someone else, someone who could sing preferably. For the most part the story is predictable but your going to have fun getting there. The scenery in the film is beautiful and Lloyd manages to incorporate the feel of the staged sets into the film. Some of the Villa, to me, looked and felt like it was supposed to be a staged set and especially towards the end of the film the backdrop screamed set. It would be hard not to find great locations on an island anyway. Plenty of beach shots and the island shot towards the end where the Church was located was fantastically done. There is plenty of scenery that will make you wish for a vacation or a day at the beach or both. Well worth the price of admission. |
