After viewing one of the best action movies of the summer, I had high hopes for Transformers: The Game. Although not as good as watching the film on the big screen, the game elaborates on the story between the Autobots and Decepticons.

RATING: 2.80 (out of 4.00)

Of course the fist thing noticeable from the game is the graphics. They amount of detail on the transformers is simply stunning. The transformation from vehicle mode to battle mode is seamless and looks just as its film counterpart, only quicker. The environment is mediocre. Some of it is detailed while others are not. The buildings and vehicles look fantastic but the trees are horrible. They have little detail and have no motion whatsoever.

The gameplay is fun at first but becomes repetitive after a while. The missions include destroying the Decepticons, following or evading the police, and gathering items for the Autobots. For the Decepticons, all you do is pretty much destroy everything. Personally, the Decepticons are more fun. Another good aspect is that you can play as most of the Transformers, Autobot or Decepticon. The bad part of that is you are not able to choose. There is a main Transformer for each environment and sometimes another for a stage in the level.

You have the freedom to roam the level whenever and just go crazy. You can destroy things or search for items that unlock bonuses. There are 100 boxes scattered everywhere and skills to perfect to unlock these extras. Probably the best extra would be the Generation 1 skins that are unlockable. The only problem with not doing a mission is hearing Optimus Prime, Megatron, or some other Transformer tell you what the mission is. It is annoying to constantly hear the same thing when you just want to explore.

Transformers: The Game is not as great as expected. Sure there is much to do at first, but before long, you are tired and would rather play something else. I would suggest renting the game before actually purchasing it. The casual gamer would be satisfied but the hardcore might be disappointed.
