Show: Big Windup! Season/Volume: 1 Genre: Anime Starring: Jeff Johnson, Greg Ayres, Anthony Bowling, Chris Burnett, Chris Cason Studio: Funimation Runtime: 315 minutes Release Date: August 18, 2009 Format: DVD Discs: 2 Rating: () Grade: D While baseball is a popular sport, why anyone would want to make an anime solely based on it is beyond me. That’s exactly what Big Windup! is and despite getting credit for not being of the usual action/romance genre, it does little to capture my attention. The anime depicts Mihashi; a pathetic pitcher who loves the sport yet has no self confidence, while he transfers to a new school and baseball team. At his old school, he was ridiculed for being one of the worst pitchers and was only pitching because his grandfather was the founder of the school. Because of this, his entire team hated him; hence why he transferred to a different school. Watching the anime is not quite as exciting as watching a baseball game; which isn’t too exciting to watch in the first place. Taking five episodes to go over a single game is a bit much too. One interesting thing about the anime is that it does go into great deal about the sport. If you’re a pitcher you will probably recognize all the chatter about the nine zones and such. Aside from playing baseball, the anime shows the development of the team as they grow closer together. It’s decent filler but nothing great. Big Windup! is an anime that needs the exclamation point at the end of the title to keep it interesting as the content is pretty lacking. For animes, I would stick to the action/romance stuff; leave baseball to the sport fanatics. |

No Hitter
I had watched and enjoyed another anime a few years back titled Princess Nine which was also an anime based on baseball and loved it. When I saw this anime a few months back I wanted to love it, wanted to engross myself in it, by neglected to watch any of it. I guess I'm glad I didn't. If your looking for a decent anime about baseball I would suggest Princess Nine which unfortunately does have a lot of romance stuff in it but manages to balance out the series with some great story arcs.
