CLOSE

James Van Der Beek was cast 2 days before production began. He was a freshman in college in New York.

Dawson's Creek really helped make The WB what it is today.  Well, it's actually nothing today but it helped make The CW what it is today.  It showed that there was an audience for over-dramatic teens and that it didn't have to have a healthy dose of cheese or comedy like Saved By The Bell.  Dawson's Creek was a guilty pleasure by anyone who watched it and, to most, was a show that nobody admitted to watching.

So, 11 years after the show premiered and 6 years after it ended, does it still hold up well?  That depends on which part of the show you watch.  The early seasons look like they are from the early 90s as opposed to the latter part of the decade.  The drama is a little over done and the show takes itself a bit too seriously.  After that, the show lightens up (both figuritively and physically) and it begins to hold up better through the end.  Now, it may not be a guilty pleasure for anyone just discovering it, but for those of you that watched this one secretly during it's original run, it is probably worth another look.

There isn't much to the bonus disc other than an extremely long and somewhat irritating trivia track (which doesn't tell you what the correct answers are when you get them wrong, nor does it tell you your score), some deleted scened, the original ending to the pilot episode, some previews and, the only thing of substance, an interview with creator Kevin Williamson giving some insight into the creation of the show and it's storylines.

Also included is a "soundtrack" CD which should probably be billed as a sampler as it is only 5 tracks (even smaller an amount considering the Dawson's Creek was one of the first shows to really use the show as a launching ground for new music).  Included are tracjs from Shawn Mullens, Adam Cohen, Splender, Five for Fighting and the main theme by Paula Cole.

Another "bonus feature" is 4 thrown together recipes with titles like "Dawson's Mashed Potatoes" that really have nothing to do with the show or characters other than the forced name ("Jen's Rolls", really?  Seems kind of mean).

This 24-disc (25 including the CD) is worth the purchase at the deflated price.  If you already have all six seasons on DVD as previously released, it's really not worth picking up just for the bonus disc and CD, unless you want it all inside one nice little package (which, should be mentioned, is a solid and well put together book).
