Ever loved something so strange that you were sure everyone else would think you strange for loving it? I think Yo Gabba Gabba is that something strange for me. From the chip tune influenced opening title theme to the collection of assorted guests there’s just to much going on in this show to even take into account the H.R.  Pufnstuf styled characters and how your friends might give you the old raised eyebrow. Sure it’s a show for kids but when has that ever stopped an adult, especially a parent, from taking a liking to a kids show?

So my plethora of information has revealed some exciting facts that may help me convince you that I’m not off my rocker when it comes to this show. For starters the show is created by what I like to call a conglomeration of musicians. DJ Lance Rock is in fact a real DJ who was a part of the band The Raymakers and is the former vocalist for the electronic band My Other Self (google them). Series co-creator Christian Jacobs is the lead singer of the ska outfit The Aquabats and even Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) makes frequent stops to the show. So all that aside, if you’ve ever seen the show, that explains how you find guests like The Shins, Biz Markie, Shiny Toy Guns, and even, yes, The Aquabats, among others, frequenting the show. That alone has made me a fan.

What about the kids you ask? What will make them love this DVD as well? For starters our kids have been inundated with learning exercises. If there is a show that’s simply about fun its usually pretty lame. Yo Gabba Gabba is all about fun and maybe picking up some small bite sized lessons. No one is consistently trying to get your kid to learn a second language, do math, spell, nothing. While I do give my approval to educational television I do think that kids need something that’s going to offer them some enjoyment with no strings attached. The show provides fun with live action characters as well as some pretty cool animation and, for reasons already stated, the show has some really great music. I love the show and as much as my own kids tell me I’m a nerd for enjoying it they to can’t seem to pull themselves away from the television when its on. The only downside is there are no special features. Would have been cool to see a band perform a different song or see some behind the scenes features.
