Show: My Generation Episode(s): Pilot Starring: Daniella Alonso, Mehcad Brooks, Kelli Garner, Jaime King, Julian Morris, Keir O'Donnell, Michael Stahl-David Network: ABC Airdate/Time: September 23, 2010 8:00pm Rating: ( )Grade: C- The premise of My Generation is actually quite interesting. A camera crew follows a group of high school seniors in 2000 and documents their life. Then, the crew revisits them in 2010 and see where they are now and how different (or similar) things are from where they imagined they would be. The plot summary sounds like a "Where are they now" episode for The Breakfast Club. There's the Overachiever, the Beauty Queen, the Nerd, the Punk, the Jock, the Brain, the Rich Kid, and the Rebel. I think they've got the whole high school spectrum covered. Unfortunately, everything is scripted. These are professional actors on camera and none of what goes on is actually reality. The show is filmed as a documentary to make it seem that way. What this means is that everything falls into place perfectly. One of the classmates just so happens to run into another on his trip back home or someone gets a phone call at just the right time. It's all too good to be true. I give the producers credit in creating something that's different from every other drama or comedy that's currently out there. It's just that this type of mocumentary doesn't really work for the whole theme. I can't really see this taking off as a full series. After watching only a single episode, I already felt content with everything. It's something that should appear as a primetime special on Dateline or 60 Minutes, not for an hour each week. My Generation is interesting and different but it could have been a smash hit if only it were actually a documentary. Honestly, I don't see the show lasting longer than a single season, at least with the current cast. Who knows, they might change it up every season with a different group of students. |
