“That Awkward Moment” is a comedy about three best friends at different points in their relationships as they try to figure out what they should do next. The movie stars Zac Efron (Jason), Miles Teller (Daniel), and Michael B. Jordan (Mikey). Jason is a good-looking womanizer that finds the girl of his dreams, Daniel is a player that falls for his wing-woman, and Mikey is newly divorced. They’ve known each other a long time, but that isn’t such a good thing when they start to grow up and mature. Can these friends find both happiness in their relationships and stay true to their friends? You’re going to have watch “That Awkward Moment” to find out.
I noticed “That Awkward Moment” attempts to be a male perspective of “He’s just not that into You,” but fails miserably in so many areas. In this movie, the plot is very immature and the dialogue is very juvenile and not authentic at all. They try to give dating or life lessons, but come off as frat boys that have no idea what they are doing unless it is making their audience a d-bag in training. For a comedy, the jokes were pretty lame and the characters were unrelatable. Most of the cast is good-looking and probably good actors, but their talents are not properly showcased in this movie.
To me, this movie was a big disappointment and had the potential to do something great but feel flat on its face. The movie was too predictable and a big waste of time. I do not in any way recommend watching “That Awkward Moment” because “He’s just not that into you” is a million times better and can teach you so much more about relationships. For you, I assume the awkward moment will be when you start to watch the movie, discover how much you paid to rent or buy it, and finally figure out how bad the movie really is. For those reasons, I am giving this movie a “D-.”

The frat party has widely been a pillar of the raunchy teen comedy genre. Films like Animal House, Van Wilder, and Old School have thrived on the crazy and over-the-top antics of testosterone-fueled college boys. While films in the genre can be very hit or miss, Neighbors raises the bar by approaching the party scene from the perspective of first time parents who are still adjusting to their newfound parenthood but still want to live that collage lifestyle.

Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are happily enjoying their newborn daughter in their quiet suburban neighborhood when one of the nearby college fraternities moves in next door. Initially hesitant, they decide to play it cool with their newfound neighbors in the hopes that they can get along with their varying lifestyles. After one too many late night parties and a surprise visits from the cops, however, the frat and its bro-tastic leader Teddy (Zac Efron) turn on Mac and Kelly and it becomes all-out war to see who will be the first to crack.

Neighbors has all the familiar staples of the frat-house comedy including ridiculous parties and dangerous pranks, but director Nicholas Stoller manages to make them feel fresh. The film is a constant back and forth between the insanely good looking Efron and the not half bad looking Rogen. The duo is hilarious together, and they manage to keep the material interesting. Honestly, there’s only so much you can do with drugs, alcohol, and dildos and while there isn’t anything mind-blowingly new in the film, it’s presented in a way that’s guaranteed to make you laugh.

Rogen and Efron are joined by a fantastic supporting cast that includes Rose Byrne, who can be hilarious in her own right, and Dave Franco, who has proven himself with a recent string of comedies. They round out their respective co-stars making the film more than just a string of one joke after another. Having a wife and a kid changes a person and you can’t be the same beer-chugging, weed-smoking, buffoon you were in your early years. In the same vein, those “golden years” don’t last forever and Franco’s character shows that there is life beyond the fraternity when he decides that it’s finally time to grow up.

That being said, Neighbors is still a comedy first and foremost. The story is only as developed as it needs to be in order to deliver its humor. When leaving the theater, you’re not going to remember how much Mac loved his daughter or Teddy’s plan to be forever immortalized on the Wall of Fame. No, you’re going to have Mac attempting to milk his wife or Teddy and the rest of the brothers making dildo casts out of their own dicks for a fundraiser forever ingrained in your brain.

Neighbors is a hilarious throwback to the classic frat-house comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously and neither should you. It delivers exactly what it sets out to achieve with some great humor that is sure to make everyone laugh.
