Pleased with no solution but our demise, these creatures destroyed our planet but lost to the overpowering human race. Although we won our planet, we lost our home. Now, some 60 years later, with Earth completely unfit for human survival, Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are sent down to dispose of Scavs, shadowed creatures who destroy every drone Jack and Victoria send out. With the sole task of destroying scavs and repairing drones, Jack looks forward to joining his people up in Titan, a moon of Saturn that is acting as a permanent home for all humans. Unfortunately for Jack, something awaits him in the wasteland that is Earth. </p> <p>It's difficult to look at a film that is getting mediocre reviews like Oblivion and try to understand what they saw that you didn't. Perhaps it's the inverse of that and I saw something that they didn't. Whatever the case, Oblivion is being met with heavy criticism by some and what seems to be reluctant enthusiasm by others. Despite their thoughts on this, allow me to explain to you why I love Oblivion. </p> <p>Oblivion is the second feature film directed by Joseph Kosinski, the first being the critical-toss-up Tron: Legacy, but it feels like it might as well be his eighth. Kosinski has his feet firmly on this film, whereas T:L (while I'm still a supporter of it) felt unstable. And it's not difficult to see how firm his feet are when the ground underneath is so solid. The story of Oblivion is half of the reason the film works so well. Unfortunately, it's almost entirely impossible to discuss without giving some inkling of spoilers away. So in the benefit of enjoying this as much as I did, I'd suggest to avoid any more trailers and walk into Oblivion as blind as possible. What I will say, though, is that it has been far too long since I've seen a sci/fi film with as much heart as Oblivion. </p> <p>The main winning factor is exactly what has been wrong with sci/fi pictures of the last couple years. Why create an interesting and near-breath taking world if you never intended on visiting it for more than a few mere glimpses in passing? I'm glaring at you, Total Recall. Kosinski knows the world he created for Oblivion is beautiful and doesn't hold out on allowing his audience to take in the massive waterfalls and never ending desert landscape. Watching Jack ride a dirt bike underneath several pieces of the Golden Gate bridge is pretty damn pleasing to the eyes. Granted, it looks like Apple is the only business doing well in 2077, but everything Kosinski has created here fits the bill near perfectly and causes Oblivion to soar up to one of the better sci/fi films I've seen in years. </p> <p>Say what you will about his personal life, but Tom Cruise has once again proven that he is still one of the greatest action stars in the game. It's great to see an actor who takes his action scenes as seriously as his dramatic ones. Most people are fine with bad acting as long as the action sequences are decent. Seeing that nothing was phoned in on Oblivion is refreshing and earns respect on this fact alone. Cruise isn't alone, either. Andrea Riseborough's Victoria is sincere and full of wonder, but knows when to turn on the heat and make for some great tension. Freeman does his usual work of using his natural voice to convince audiences that it's good acting. It works well for a minimal role such as this so it's not a loss. Olga Kurylenko really sells mystery with her role as Julia. She keeps the story grounded when things begin to get a bit complicated, which isn't always an easy task. Julia is an extremely important part to get right and Kurylenko doesn't disappoint. Melissa Leo does her usual work of making you never realize that Melissa Leo is Melissa Leo until end credits or IMDB say otherwise. She's a phantom, that woman. </p> <p>There are two big factors that really help sell Oblivion: it's soundtrack and impressive IMAX release. Similar to what he did with Tron: Legacy and Daft Punk, Kosinski asked electronic artist M83 to create the soundtrack to his world of Oblivion. At times, it sounds a bit familiar to Daft Punk's score, with even a hint of Hans Zimmer's The Dark Knight Rises, but it does enough to secure itself as a dynamite soundtrack with attention grabbing rhythms and a powerhouse end credits song. Speaking of powerhouse, IMAX is really the only way to see Oblivion. After experiencing Kosinski's beautiful wasteland on that towering of a screen, I couldn't imagine downgrading to a regular sized screen. I'm unaware if this was shot with an IMAX camera, but I'd be surprised if it you could achieve as perfect of a shot as Kosinski does on an IMAX screen with an IMAX specific camera. With M83's exciting soundtrack blasting through the massive speakers in IMAX theaters, Oblivion is going to be a fantastic experience for many people this weekend. </p> <p>Courtesy of a great vision, breath taking visual effects, a phenomenal soundtrack, and a beautiful IMAX experience, Oblivion is a fantastic sc/fi adventure that will tear audiences in half with their opinions. Depp stars as a man who creates a computer program that develops an awareness.<br /> Kate Mara, Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall co-star.</p> <p>Transcendence was penned by Jack Paglen and developed by Annie Marter and Straight Up Films, whose principals include Marisa Polvino, Kate Cohen and Regency Boies. Polvino, Marter and Cohen will produce, with David Valdes (The Book of Eli), Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove co-producing.</p> <p>Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder are executive producers.</p> <p>Principal photography will begin in May in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, he loses it all when a freak snowstorm causes the President’s car to careen off a bridge, with a few guards and the first lady crashing onto the frozen lake underneath. Not being able to look at Banning without thinking of his empty promise to save her, Asher has him fired and secluded to a desk job. 18 months later, Banning remains sympathetic and wishes to return to doing what he does best. Little does he know that he’ll get his wish, as a North Korean terrorist (Rick Yune) leads a massive attack on the White House and holds President Asher hostage, threatening to launch nuclear explosives on the United States. As acting President, House Speaker Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) must help talk Banning through the White House to not only recover the President, but to eliminate any person standing between him and saving the country.</p> <p> <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> was always destined to be called Die Hard or, more commonly, “Die Hard in the White House”. Action packed? Sure. But Die Hard? Yippie Ki-Nay.</p> <p> Sure, we have one giant ball of masculine fighting through a secured building to reach his target, but that hardly earns it the title of one of the most memorable actions flicks ever. If I had to compare <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> to any other movie, it would have to be <em>Man On A Ledge</em>. Both would make a pretty typical Saturday afternoon double feature on TNT: Action, drama, political themes and poor humor. While some of <em>Olympus</em>’ humor hits the right spot (“How about we play a game of ‘Fuck Off? You go first”), most of the humor seems to be unintentional. The problem with both <em>Man </em>and <em>Olympus </em>is that neither really know what they are. For more on the comparisons, check out my earlier review of <em>Man On a Ledge</em> <a href="http://shakefire.com/review/man-on-a-ledge">right here</a>. <em>Olympus </em>seems to be getting comfortable in its’ admittedly impressive action set pieces when it takes a U-turn, putting the majority of the remaining runtime in a control room with political figures, discussing how to save the President. Audiences are taken away from a Michael Bay wet dream to catch up on a poorly written <a href="http://shakefire.com/tv-show/the-west-wing"><em>West Wing</em></a> episode. Pacing definitely isn’t on director Antoine Fuqua’s side here.</p> <p> In an action movie, one would usually expect up to date graphics to truly immerse the audience into the story and events. However, something went very, very wrong with <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em>. Certain shots of choppers closing in on the White House and evading gunfire are downright embarrassing to watch. My lovely girlfriend, who, bless her heart, doesn’t fully understand VFX leaned over and asked me “How much was this budget?”. She cannot be faulted for her assumption that this budget was low. I myself was floored at some of the cheaper shots sitting among some decently sized action pieces. Some people claim that it fits for the movie, as not to scare some audiences into remembering the tragic events of 9/11. Not once in those 120 minutes did I think about 9/11 or anything other than how the director of <em>Training Day</em> could have made this picture. 11 years may not be enough to grieve and forget, but <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> isn’t too similar to worry about it. And the poor graphics wouldn’t be a big problem if it weren’t for some very uninteresting or important scenes. If they look bad, just cut them! Trust me, we can do without another shot of choppers cruising through a boring nighttime DC screenshot.</p> <p> But <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> isn’t all bad. Gerard Butler actually does some good work as the growling Banning, fighting Korean after Korean to get to his target, the evil Kang. Side note: Kang is revealed to be one of the world’s most wanted terrorists...who snuck past both Korean and American borders...disguised in glasses. A character tries to remedy this by saying that western intelligence hasn’t been able to get any photos of the criminal. Sigh. Anyways, like I said, not all bad. Eckhart does his Harvey Dent scream every now and then and it is just great. Morgan Freeman narrates Butler through the White House and does the job we’ve come to expect from Freeman. If we want to discuss pleasant surprises in <em>Olympus</em>, we can bring up Dylan McDermott. Without diving too far into his arc, it’s a nice change of pace from what we’ve seen recently from McDermott. If we want to talk about unpleasant surprises, we can discuss <a href="http://shakefire.com/talent/melissa-leo">Melissa Leo</a>’s Ruth McMillan. To be honest, I wasn’t aware she played Ruth until I just checked IMDB. While she was phenomenal in <em><a href="http://shakefire.com/movie/the-fighter">The Fighter</a></em>, this just doesn’t seem like the same actress at play. At one point, Leo lets out a cry along the lines of “NO! NO! GOD, NO!”. I know the feeling, Melissa.</p> <p> <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> has some decent action sequences, doesn’t shy away from showing gore and features some good acting, but none of these can save <em>Olympus</em> from falling as hard as it does. Poor unnecessary graphics, gaping plot holes and uneven tones make Fuqua’s newest attempt fall more into his more recent work (<em><a href="http://shakefire.com/movie/brooklyns-finest">Brooklyn’s Finest</a></em>) than his earlier, more inspired pictures (<em>Training Day</em>, <em>Shooter</em>). And yes, <em>Olympus Has Fallen</em> is being called “...a better <em>Die Hard</em> than the newest Die Hard movie” and that might be true.
