The 36th annual Atlanta Film Festival kicks off with L!fe Happens

The Atlanta Film Festival opened this past weekend with a screening on the female buddy comedy, L!fe Happens. Director Kat Coiro and actor Fallon Goodson joined hundreds of eager film fanatics on the red carpet beforehand and stayed for a Q&A afterwards.

L!fe Happens stars Krysten Ritter,  Kate Bosworth, and Rachel Bilson as three best friends who enjoying going out, partying, and simply living life to the fullest. Unfortunately for Kim (Ritter), she gets pregnant one night and everything changes. Can friendship survive over motherhood?

The female centric comedy has been on the rise in recent years after the massive success of Bridesmaids. Written by long-time friends Kat Coiro and Krysten Ritter, L!fe Happens is a quirky comedy that embraces the reality of bringing a child into the world and how life dramatically changes, whether you like it or not. It wasn’t until after Coiro had a baby that the main plot idea popped into her mind. “When we were writing there was no prototype that worked, and then I had a baby and we said, ‘Eureka! There it is. That is the thing that can make these girls sympathetic and can kinda make them be bad but still good,’” said Coiro.

L!fe Happens is just one of dozens of films set to debut at the Atlanta Film Festival, which is now in its 36th year. 2012 marks the biggest year for the ATLFF with more than 2,100 film submissions and 140+ of those selected for screening. Covering every genre imaginable as well as interactive seminars for film industry professionals, the Atlanta Film Festival provides something for everyone.  The festival runs all this week until Sunday, April 1st at the Landmark Midtown theaters. Closing the festival will be the much anticipated The Cabin in the Woods on Saturday. Seeing as Atlanta is the current horror capital of the south, we couldn’t think of a better closer.

Be sure to stay tuned to Shakefire and myself as we bring you more from the Atlanta Film Festival throughout the week!
