Dominion arrives on Syfy, June 19th. An army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, has waged a war of possession against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, has chosen to side with humanity against Gabriel. After the 25-year-long battle, newly fortified cities have arisen to protect human survivors.
A few years back I saw this really terrible movie. It was called Legion. I saw it because it starred Paul Bettany as an angel trying to save humanity from a bunch of other angels. The plot was weak, too much exposition, and the only redeeming quality at all was of angels shooting at each other with machine guns. It was a box office bomb.
What's that? This show is a sequel to that movie? Who would make a sequel to a terrible box office bomb?
I guess the answer is Syfy. Though perhaps what the movie needed was more time to breathe. Gone are all the movie stars, but here to stay are a bunch of TV stars. I mean, they got Anthony Head. You know, Giles from Buffy? And there are other people I think I recognize.
I'm being flippant.
Though, I just about broke the TV throwing things at it as the show went for lazy tropes. Star crossed lovers? Business is evil? They call the city "Vega" just because the "Vegas" sign has fallen over and the "S" is gone? Thunderdome? Really? Thunderdome?!?
However, Dominion is surprisingly... not bad. I can't say it's a great show, but it bears more scrutiny. I'll give in another few episodes after the pilot airs before I decide to drop it from the DVR.
