With the surge of movies jumping into the third dimension and blockbuster sequels still taking the helm, 2011 has provided us with some great films.

Over the course of the year, I reviewed a total a 94 theatrical films and saw likely more than 100. In total I gave 17 A's, B's, 21 C's, and 10 D's. Surprisingly there were no F's this year for me, although Patty and Ryan would disagree. Having seen the Blu-ray of Red Riding Hood, I'd have to agree wholeheartedly with Ryan's review.

2011 saw plenty of great movies, both in blockbusters and smaller, independent films. Here are my top 10 films of the year:

10. The Muppets
It's been nearly six years since Jim Henson's Muppets appeared on the big screen, but their return this year was bigger and better than ever. Featuring Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Fozzy Bear along with all the other Muppets along with dozens of human co-stars and cameos, The Muppets brings back a sense of nostalgia for those who grew up watching the TV show and introduces the cast to an entire new generation.

9. Horrible Bosses
2011 was a big year for comedies, and Horrible Bosses featured a hilarious cast of characters that you loved to hate. On the underappreciated workers side you have Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis, and for the horrible bosses themselves you have Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey. If you've ever had a boss you just couldn't stand, this is the film to watch as a great stress reliever.

8. Hanna
Saoirse Ronan is known for appearing in knockout roles such as Atonement and The Lovely Bones and once again she manages to impress audiences with her cold assassin demeanor. If you're looking for an action-packed adrenaline rush and a great story, Hanna is the film for you.

7. Attack the Block
An alien invasion has never felt this good. Despite a limited release, Attack the Block manages to deliver both action and comedy wrapped together in a sci-fi script from Joe Cornish. Of course, like all great British films there are rumors of an American remake.

6. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
What sets Rise of the Planet of the Apes apart from all other films is its superb use of motion capture and special effects. The apes in the film, particularly Caesar, look and function so realistically you'd think they were real. Andy Serkis does an Oscar-worthy performance at capturing the detailed movements and emotion of Caesar.

5. Rango
Animated films are usually dominated by the powerhouse Pixar, but with Cars 2 failing to live up to expectations that leaves plenty of room for the Western throwback Rango to step in. From the iconic movie references to the dynamic performance of Johnny Depp, this is one film built for kids and adults alike.

4. X-Men: First Class
Maybe it's the classic mutant cameos or the fact that anything after the atrocious X-Men: The Last Stand is acceptable, but X-Men: First Class delivered the best superhero film of 2011. For fans of the series, it brings a new and fresh look to its characters. The film explores the origins of the Mutant Academy and how the rift between them and the Brotherhood all began.

3. Warrior
Tom Hardy's career has taken off since last year's Inception, and Warrior shows just how dedicated an actor he is. The man is an absolute beast in this film and showcases the furious and animalistic nature of MMA fighting. If you have any doubts about Hardy taking on the role of Bane in the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises, simply watch Warrior and prepare to be amazed.

2. 50/50
Cancer can be a touchy subject, especially within a comedy but 50/50 manages to handle the subject brilliantly. Both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen feel like real people within a real situation. The film blends the perfect amount of comedy with drama to give you just the amount of laughs in an otherwise serious scenario. 50/50 will pull on your emotions unlike any other film on this list.

1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Remakes of foreign films are tricky. Most of the time, they fail to live up to their original counterparts. It gives me great pleasure then, to name The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as my pick for the best film of 2011. The film excels in every aspect, with Rooney Mara putting on a stellar performance as the punk hacker Lisbeth Salander. Her dedication to the role is what sets the film apart from the rest. I can only hope David Fincher returns to remake the rest of the Millennium series.

So there you have it, the top 10 films of 2011. Do you agree or disagree? The pic fell less than 22% from its opening weekend, when it came in No. 2. To rise to No. 1 is an unusual feat, and reflects the film's great buzz.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, from 20th Century Fox, also remained a worthy contender in its third weekend, falling only 41% to an estimated $16.3 million for a domestic cume of $133.8 million and coming in No. 2.

The Help and Rise of the Apes left the weekend’s four new films struggling.

Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, from the Weinstein Co./Dimension, did the best of the bunch, coming in No. 3 and grossing an estimated $12 million.

"We were within range of our expectations. Yes, it was on the low end, but given the market conditions, we're okay with this number. We're going to be in good shape with this movie, and it will play for the rest of the summer, since there's no other family film coming in," Weinstein president of distribution Erik Lomis said.

Yet the family pic, receiving a B+ CinemaScore, fell notably short of the $33 million earned by the last Spy Kids in its July 2003 debut.

Nu Image/Millennium’s big-budget Conan the Barbarian, distributed by Lionsgate, and DreamWorks’ Colin Farrell-Anton Yelchin vampire remake Fright Night both fell well short of expectations, grossing $10 million and $8.3 million, respectively, to come in No. 3 and No. 4.

“It was a rough weekend, and disappointing for the new films,” Lionsgate executive vice president of distribution David Spitz said.

"Historically, August has always been a challenge, but we at Lionsgate have certainly enjoyed plenty of success with titles like The Expendables and The Last Exorcism,” Spitz continued.

Marcus Nispel’s Conan and Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night, both based on 1980s properties, ended up appealing largely to older moviegoers (also, both are rated R).

Of Fright Night’s audience, 60% was over the age of 25; Conan, 67%. The two pics—each receiving a B- CinemaScore--also vied for males. Males made up 76% of Conan’s audience, and 60% of Fright Night’s.

Conan was fully financed by Nu Image/Millennium Films and cost upwards of $70 million to produce. Fright Night cost far less, or just under $30 million, but the pic’s soft performance is still a disappointment for DreamWorks. Disney is distributing Fright Night.

Conan and Fright Night, along with Spy Kids, were released in 3D, meaning a deluge of 3D titles. Spy Kids cost $27.5 million to produce.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Focus Features’ romantic One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, grossed $5.1 million to come in on the low end of expectations. Based on the best-selling book by British author David Nicholls, One Day had a limited footprint, only playing in 1,721 theaters.

Focus, which produced the film per its deal with Random House, said it is pleased with the result. One Day opens next week in the U.K., where it should do strong business.

In the U.S., One Day likely struggled to lure moviegoers otherwise intrigued by The Help, with both films based on books and drawing older females. Of those buying tickets for One Day, 72% were females, while 73% were over the age of 25. The film drew a disappointing B- CinemaScore.

While DreamWorks and Disney are perplexed by Fright Night's tepid debut--the film received great reviews and played well in screenings--the two companies are elated over The Help's great start.

"We hoped that The Help would be a breath of fresh air at the end of a busy summer, and that has turned out to be the case," Disney executive vice president of distribution Dave Hollis said.

In other headlines, Sony's The Smurfs placed No. 6 for the weekend domestically, grossing an estimated $8 million for a cume of $117.7 million. Even better, the hit family film crossed the $300 million mark worldwide over the weekend, ending the session with a cume of $329 million, inlcuding an international total of $211.4 million.

Sore spots incuded Fox's Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, which tumbled to No. 15 in its second weekend, declining 69% to $1.8 million for a domestic cume of $10.5 million.

At the specialty box office, documentary Senna made a strong showing as it expanded to 14 theaters in its second weekend, grossing an estimated 169K for a strong per screen average of $12,071 and cume of $280K. Producers Distribution Agency is distributing the pic.

Kevin Smith's Red State made its debut in Los Angeles, grossing $25,800 for a cume of $1 million.

And the Weinstein Co.'s Sarah's Key continued to score strong returns, grossing $783K as it expanded into a total of 201 theaters for a domestic cume of $3.1 million.

Domestic Box Office Top 10 (Aug. 19-21)

1. The Help (2,690): $20.5 million

2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (3,471): $16.3 million

3. *Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D (3,295): $12 million

4. *Conan the Barbarian (3,015): $10 million

5. *Fright Night (3,114): $8.3 million

6. The Smurfs (3,057): $8 million

7. Final Destination 5 (3,115): $7.7 million

8. 30 Minutes or Less (2,888): $6.3 million

9. *One Day (1,721): $5.1 million

10. The financial sting is minimized by the pic’s modest $9 million budget, but perception is a separate issue, considering how popular the TV show is.

Those who turned out did like what they saw, giving Glee the Movie—which is only playing in 3D theaters—an A CinemaScore (moviegoers under the age of 25 gave it an A+). The concert pic played heavily to younger girls, with females making up 82% of the audience, while 66% were under the age of 25.

Fox took solace in the fact that Rise of the Apes jumped the $100 million mark at the domestic box office in its second frame, dropping only 50%. Overseas, it grossed $40.5 million from 40 markets over the weekend for an international total of $75 million and worldwide haul of $180 million.

“We have a movie that is a broad, mainstream commercial hit. It’s remarkable to only drop 50% and do $27.5 million worth of business, despite $60 million worth of new movies coming into the marketplace,” Fox senior vice president of distribution Chris Aronson said.

Disney, which distributed The Help for DreamWorks and Participant, also was ebullient. The female-driven movie, based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about white women and their maids in the Jim Crow south, drew an A+ CinemaScore, virtually guaranteeing a long and healthy run.

“The fact that audiences are responding this way couldn’t make us any happier,” Disney executive vice president of distribution Dave Hollis said.

The Help, directed by Tate Taylor (Stockett’s childhood friend), played especially well in African-American theaters and upscale commercial theaters, such as the Landmark and ArcLight in Los Angeles, and Lincoln Square in New York.

The movie's large ensemble cast is led by Viola Davis, Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard.

While 74% of Friday night’s audience was female, that stat dropped to 69% on Saturday, indicating that more older men were showing up.

“It gives us a great deal of hope that more and more people will be exposed to it,” Hollis said.

The Help, costing $25 million to produce, was co-financed by DreamWorks and Participant, while 1492 Pictures produced the movie with Brunson Green and Taylor's film company.

Faced with competition from Rise of the Apes for male attention, Final Destination 5 and Ruben Fleischer’s R-rated action-comedy 30 Minutes or Less opened to ho-hum results.

Final 5, from New Line and Warner Bros., opened at No. 3, grossing $18.4 million and receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Heading into the weekend, box office observers thought the 3D pic, costing $45 million to produce, would open north of $20 million. The last title in the franchise, The Final Destination, debuted to $27.4 million in August 2009.

The good news: Final Destination drew 75% of its grosses from 3D locations.

"In a summer of light 3D performances, to do 75% is huge," said Warner Bros. executive vice president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein.

30 Minutes or Less, headlining Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride, grossed $13 million for the weekend. The pic received a B CinemaScore, with men making up 58% of the audience. Nearly 70% of those turning out were under the age of 25.

Media Rights Capital fully financed 30 Minutes, which cost $28 million to produce. Like Glee the Movie and Final Destination, 30 Minutes doesn't need to do big box office business, since its production budget was relatively modest.

Elsewhere at the box office, Sony's The Smurfs continued to shine, jumping the $100 million domestically and winning the international race with a weekend gross of $60 million. Through Sunday, the pic's global total was $242 million, including a domestic cume of $101.5 million and international cume of $141 million.

Domestic Box Office, 8/12-8/14
1. The pic easily placed No. 1.

Overseas, the prequel also exceeded expectations, grossing a stellar $23.4 million from 25 territories, including only four major markets, Australia, Spain, Russia and Taiwan, where it came in No. 1

Rise of the Apes is particularly drawing notice for its photo-realistic apes, which were created by Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital using advanced performance capture technology. Andy Serkis plays the ape Caesar, and is the movie’s lead character.

"The combination of never-before-seen special effects combined with a powerful, emotional story made for a supremely satisfying epxerience at the movies," Fox senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt, Rise of the Apes successfully relaunches the cult sci-fi franchise, and is a big win for the filmmakers and Fox’s marketing operation. Heading into the weekend, tracking suggested that the movie—also starring James Franco, Frida Pinto and John Lithgow--would open to $30 million to $35 million, tops.

But the movie took on a life of its own when receiving an A- CinemaScore, in addition to rave reviews. Exit polls showed the movie appealing to all age groups, including younger audience members who don't remember the franchise. More women than expected turned out, making up 46 percent of the audience. The origins pic was down 2% from Friday to Saturday, pointing to the pic's growing buzz.

Rise of the Apes also is a big win for Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark’s Chernin Entertainment, since it’s the company’s first title.

"We're thrilled to launch Chernin Entertainment with a film that so positively resonated with audiences We're proud of the artistic achievement of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, as it is a testament to a smart script, great direction by Rupert Wyatt, stellar actor performances, the amazing visual effects created by the Weta team and the passion and dedication of the entire crew and our partners at 20th Century Fox," Chernin and Clark said in a statement.

The movie, made for $93 million, was co-financed by Fox, Dune Entertainment and Ingenious.

The weekend's other new offering, Universal's R-rated Ryan Reynolds-Jason Bateman body switching comedy The Change-Up, didn’t fare as well, grossing a soft $13.5 million and coming in No. 4.

Directed by David Dobkins, Change-Up entered a saturated market for raunchy comedies, and scored the lowest opening of the summer for its genre. The movie only received a B CinemaScore, and played older, with 50% of the audience over the age of 30.

Universal and Relativity Media co-financed Change-Up, which cost $52 million to produce.

Sony’s surprise hit The Smurfs stayed strong in its second weekend, declining less than 42% to an estimated $21 million for a domestic cume of $76.2 million. The 3D kids pic placed No. 2.

Smurfs began rolling out in earnest at the international box office over the weekend, grossing an impressive $45.2 million from 30 territories, including Mexico, Brazil, France and Germany, for a foreign cume of $52.7 million and worldwide total of $128.9 million.

Universal and DreamWorks’ Cowboys & Aliens continued to struggle in its second outing, trailing Smurfs and grossing $15.8 million for a domestic total of $67.4 million. The movie fell 57%, a big drop considering the film is playing best to an older audience. Adult-skewing films generally build momentum, and see minimal drops if they are working.

Exclusive?:

Tags:

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

The Change-Up

Box Office

Sun, 07 Aug 2011 16:13:15 +0000 Peter Oberth 21359 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2011/08/07/rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-scores-big-with-54-mil-opening#comments Rise of the Planet of the Apes http://shakefire.com/review/rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes

Did you know?

The name of Tom Felton's character Dodge Landon is a reference to the characters Dodge (Jeff Burton) and Landon (Robert Gunner), Colonel Taylor's (Charlton Heston) fellow astronauts in Planet of the Apes.

When the original Planet of the Apes was release in 1968 it surprised everyone with its twist ending revealing that the astronauts were not on some alien planet but actually Earth, now ruled by intelligent apes. What wasn’t discussed was how this all came about, and what had happened to all the humans. It was all hinted at with the subsequent films but never did we get to see the significant point in which it all changed.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes reboots the series and takes us back to the beginning where humans are attempting to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s and are testing it on apes. As it turns out, not only does the cure work but it also further enhances the brain, making the apes more intelligent. Caesar is one of the first apes to display this remarkable intelligence although he is secretly being kept by lead scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) out of fear of what would happen to him. Eventually, Caesar gets locked up by animal control after a freak incident. No liking living in captivity, Caesar devises a way to escape and revolt against his human oppressors.

Using the latest in digital technology, Rise of the Planet of the Apes manages to give character and emotion to the apes in the film. Yes, it’s easy to see that they’re not using real apes in the scenes but you immediately feel that this was the right decision. Andy Serkis aka Gollum from The Lord of the Rings brings Caesar to life through motion capture.

You’re instantly drawn to Caesar’s character. You know what he’s thinking; what he’s feeling. For this reason, you actually develop a bond with him as he’s not just some “damn dirty ape.” In some ways he’s the villain of the film, trying to take down humanity, but you can’t help but cheer for him and want him to win despite knowing the inevitable conclusion.

Another thing that makes the film so enjoyable is all the little references to the other Planet of the Apes films, especially the first. Fans will no doubt go through the film with a fine comb trying to find all the clues. I think even at one point you can even see the original film playing in the background. Things like this that are what make something good into something great. Rise of the Planet of the Apes makes you want to go back and watch the original films that much more. It takes various aspects from them and manages to create an original story that’s entertaining and expands the mythos.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes takes you back to the beginning before the apes ruled the Earth when things were just beginning to change. The film also manages to foreshadow future events, setting up possible sequels. Whether you’re a fan of the classic films or a newcomer altogether, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is fantastic for everyone.

Follow me on
