Freedom or Death is a capable band, I’ll give them that, but they’ve made one of those classic blunders that a lot of bands out there make when it comes to social networking. For starters their Myspace page. I went snooping around to get my review ready for post trying to learn what I can about the band and their ideologies, especially concerning their new self titled EP. What I found was a shrine devoted to these guys starting off with five statements from other writers who have reviewed their work. I drop down to the About section hoping to get some word of mouth from the band and while seemingly passionate it feels like spin. So below find my perspective on the band and their new EP from the ears to the fingers from a music lover like yourself.

The album starts off with Lost In Dances, which you can find on their Myspace page providing a soundtrack for a video by Spike Jonze. Lets be honest, from the first few seconds of the song all I hear is Joy Division/The Cure, especially with that Bernard Sumner guitar work and that Cure Synth. it’s a capable track but nothing I haven’t heard before, arrangement-wise and considering the already running line of bands retrofitting their sound to copycat some of the great bands from the 80’s it’s a bit disappointing. The next track on the EP is Back For More which is another disappointing track for all the same reasons. Freedom or Death has a good vocal sound, maybe nothing revolutionary, but for what they do it works. Arrangement’s have not impressed me so far. Back For More could have been a track fallen straight off of Radiohead’s Kid A. Solider is the third track on the EP and finally we get a taste of something that doesn’t sound copy and pasted. The track is driven by a plucky monotonous guitar and a driving bass line that accentuates the busy drums and acrobatic vocals on the track. Another unfortunate downfall of their About me section is that the band states their all about the lyrical. Without the lyrics handy your going to have to listen hard and numerous times to the tracks. While Soldier is a fantastic step in the right direction is almost pointless lyrically as most of the vocals blend in to much with the ambient sound. That problem is corrected a bit on their next track, This Crowded Room, which is a mellow track with drums, keyboard, Xylophone, and a beautiful harmonizing vocal style. Vocals are well heard but can’t say there’s much to them. Finally the EP ends with Meter Maid which is an acoustic track much in the same vain as Travis that includes a space rock keyboard solo. This is a good end to the EP to that’s raw and really puts FOD out there peeling away the things that made the EP questionable in the beginning. If you just take the EP for what it is you can get countless hours of enjoyment out of it. Just do yourself a favor and avoid the hype until after you’ve listened to them. Their entire new EP is being streamed at their Myspace page for your listening pleasure. Enjoy.
