Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to the rest, after 12 years of judging on American Idol I have decided it is time to leave after this season," he told E! News. "I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry. It's been a life changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures."</p> <p>The news comes just hours after The Hollywood Reporter reported that fellow Idol judge Mariah Carey is no longer being managed by Jackson.</p> <p>Meanwhile, rumors have circulated that producers could be eyeing an entirely new panel for next season. A rep for Fox declined to comment.</p> <p>Idol's ratings slide continues, with the show down 22 percent this season. Fast national ratings show Wednesday night's Idol dropping a tenth of a point among adults 18-49, though adjustments should see it matching or besting last week's showing. The penultimate performance show of the season averaged a 2.8 in the key demo. In the 8 p.m. hour, it lost to a special outing of NBC's The Voice (2.7 adults over Idol's 2.5 adults), which topped it by two tenths of a point. (In viewers, Idol had the edge that hour, 9.5 over 8.7 million.) Fox averaged 10.8 million viewers for its two-hour block.</p> <p>The show has struggled with battles between freshman judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj -- both onscreen and on Twitter, and older-skewing theme nights (among season 12's guest mentors: Smokey Robinson and Harry Connick Jr.) haven't helped.</p> <p>Jackson, however, has been the one constant in the series' 12-year history. Initially cast in 2002 for his industry know-how as a longtime producer and seasoned bass player, his signature "dawg" comments became a pop culture punchline that persists even today.</p> <p>Based out of Hollywood's Henson recording studios, Jackson continues to work recording and producing music, most notably with Mariah Carey. The two go back to their respective Columbia Records days, when Jackson was vice president of A&amp;R during the 1990s and Carey was signed to the label from 1988 to 2001.</p> <p>Expect a big send-off on next week's season 12 finale, as Cowell received when he exited the show after season nine.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-talent field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/randy-jackson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Randy Jackson</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tv-show field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">TV Show:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tv-shows/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div> Thu, 09 May 2013 21:50:55 +0000 Peter Oberth 46901 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2013/05/09/randy-jackson-exits-american-idol#comments Blake Lewis http://shakefire.com/artist/blake-lewis <div class="field field-name-field-photo field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/photo/public/artists/blake-lewis-03.jpg?itok=1VdfNVJ4" width="214" height="316" alt="" /></div></div></div><h1 id="page-title">Blake Lewis</h1><div class="title-type">Singer/Songwriter</div><div class="field field-name-field-realname field-type-text field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Birth Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Blake Colin Lewis</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-birthday field-type-datetime field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Birthday:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="1981-07-21T00:00:00-04:00">Tuesday, July 21, 1981</span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-sign field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Sign:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/signs/cancer" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Cancer</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-birth-place field-type-text field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Birth Place:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Redmond, WA</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-genre field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Genre:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/genres/music/pop" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Pop</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-label field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Label(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/labels/republic-records" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Republic Records</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-height field-type-text field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Height:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">5&#039; 8&quot;</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-years field-type-datetime field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Years Active:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="2007-01-01T00:00:00-05:00">2007</span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-website-link field-type-link-field field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="http://www.blakelewisofficial.com">Official Website</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-facebook-link field-type-link-field field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/blakelewis">Official Facebook</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-twitter-username field-type-twitter-username field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="http://twitter.com/blakelewis">@blakelewis</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Blake Colin Lewis is an American singer-songwriter and beatboxer who was the runner-up on the sixth season of American Idol. Now, with a Billboard Hot 100 top-ten debut under his belt, the Leesburg, Georgia-bred songwriter is gearing up to record his first album for 19 entertainment/Interscope Records. “It’s going to have more of a rock sound it,” says Phillips, who counts Eric Clapton as one of his key influences. “The most important thing to me is making music that comes from my heart and really connects with people on a gut level.”</p> <p>Phillips first began making music when he was 14, thanks largely to his older sister’s boyfriend (and now husband), Benjamin Neil. “Ben’s an amazing guitarist—he taught me a few chords one day and I just fell in love with it immediately,” says Phillips. Since the two lived in separate towns, Phillips kept on studying guitar on his own (“mostly by playing along to the karaoke machine”) and soon found himself mastering riffs from classic-rock tracks like Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.” Several years later, Phillips formed an acoustic band with his sister and brother-in-law and added singing to his repertoire. “I used to always keep my singing to myself and never let anyone hear me, but then my sister and brother-in-law caught me one night and told me I had to start singing in the band,” he says. “We played at a church that Sunday and the room was packed and I thought I was going to pass out, but I did it.”</p> <p>After graduating high school, Phillips began studying industrial systems technology at Albany Technical College in Georgia and continued playing music with his brother-in-law. “We got a name for ourselves, playing in college towns and at festivals, sometimes just playing for free or for food,” says Phillips. With encouragement from his family and friends, Phillips took a break from working in his family’s pawn shop and auditioned for American Idol in summer 2011—and soon found himself tearing through powerful, full-throated performances of songs by artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett on the Idol stage. As he readies himself to record his debut release, Phillips aims to channel that soulful spirit into acoustic-driven rock with an earthy, authentic sound. “I’m still so amazed at how this has worked out,” says Phillips, who plans to bring his brother-in-law onto the album as a guitarist. “I knew I’d always have music no matter what happens, but I never imagined that it would get to this level. I’m so excited to just get going and have a great time doing it.”</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/phillip-phillips" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Phillip Phillips</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div> Mon, 18 Feb 2013 23:19:11 +0000 Pandora 43864 at http://shakefire.com 'American Idol' Premiere Down 19 Percent From Last Year http://shakefire.com/news/2013/01/17/american-idol-premiere-down-19-percent-from-last-year <div class="field field-name-field-news field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/news/tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/news/4554uy_0_1.jpg?itok=4h3zsLwk" width="640" height="520" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>"American Idol" returned Wednesday night, and Fast National returns give the veteran singing competition's twelfth season premiere 17.81 million viewers and a 6.0 rating among adults 18-49 -- losses of 19 percent from last January's debut.</p> <p>Among total viewers, the veteran Fox series took a bigger hit than it did between the last two seasons when it dropped 17 percent, but among adults 18-49, the dip wasn't as big as last season's (25 percent). The 2012 Idol opener brought 21.9 million viewers and a 7.4 rating.</p> <p>However disappointing, given the big push to revamp the show, the numbers still leave American Idol safely ahead of any showing "The Voice" brought in the fall. It also gave Fox an easy win for the night by all measures, besting the rest of the big four's demo showings combined. History also tells us that "Idol" will recoup at least a tenth of a point when time zone adjustments come in later today.</p> <p>The next test for Idol comes tonight, when the historically lower-rated Thursday premiere opens. Last year's brought a 5.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 18 million viewers.</p> <p>Increased competition weighed slightly on other primetime broadcasts between 8 and 10 p.m., though many series were in repeats last night.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tv-show field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">TV Show:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tv-shows/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div> Thu, 17 Jan 2013 20:50:32 +0000 Peter Oberth 23342 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2013/01/17/american-idol-premiere-down-19-percent-from-last-year#comments Nigel Lythgoe: The Interview (American Idol) http://shakefire.com/interview/nigel-lythgoe-the-interview-american-idol <div class="field field-name-field-interview field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/interviews/tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/interviews/Nigel_lythgoe_0.jpg?itok=fdBTYGry" width="640" height="960" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/nigel-lythgoe" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Nigel Lythgoe</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-fact-title field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Interesting Tidbits</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-random-fact field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Nigel is the only person to dance in, choreograph, direct and produce the Royal Variety Performance for the Queen of England.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Nigel Lythgoe is best known as one of the main judges on the Fox Network hit reality show “So you think you can Dance.” However, most people do not know that he is also the executive producer for that show as well as “American Idol.” Starting with the auditions on Wednesday, January 16th, 2013 at 8pm on Fox, “American Idol” will be back for its amazing 12th season to find new and upcoming talent. Besides some new judges, there are a couple of other changes to the show this season. Nigel was kind enough to talk to Shakefire.com to discuss the upcoming season of “American Idol.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>SHAKEFIRE</b>: Hi Nigel!<br /><p></p><strong><font color="red">NIGEL LYTHGOE</font></strong>: Hello Paul!<br /><b><br /> SF</b>: My first question is, besides the judges, are there any other new changes or anything new we can expect from this season?<br /><strong><font color="red">NL</font></strong>: Well, we’ve done quite a little interesting thing with the auditions and the fact that American Idol has always gone out to the cities and we take over huge football stadiums and then bring it right down to the auditions. However, this time we’ve actually taken an American Idol bus out to the little towns this year, with a producer on board who have brought kids back in to the auditions. You get to see kids that wouldn’t necessarily be either close enough to one of the cities we were auditioning or even have the financial means to get to one of the big cities. I must say this new element introduced new talent to us.</p> <p>Plus we had another new thing called “I Nominate,” which was friends and family who thought that the person that they were nominating had a great voice, but were a little too nervous to come along to audition for us. Randy Jackson actually went out and we did some hidden camera stuff and shocked them and surprised them. We then gave them an audition number so that they actually skipped the lines and they came straight in to see the judges, if Randy agreed. That was quite interesting and gives a little something different to the audition process also.</p> <p>Lastly, we changed up Hollywood Week quite a bit. For the first time ever in Hollywood Week, we split the weeks up and gave a week to the boys and then a week to the girls. This really gave us an awful lot more focus on our talent this year and that allowed us to see the woods through the trees, if you will. We plan on doing that during the Vegas rounds as well up until we get to our top ten. These changes are meant to give us better insight into the talent.<br /><p></p><b><br /> SF</b>: Wow! That’s a good number of changes and will surely mix things up this season. Are there any musical guests or special coaches or judges you could talk about for this season or that you’re allowed to talk about?<br /><strong><font color="red">NL</font></strong>: No guest judges this year. We’ve got enough with the four judges we currently have right now. Also, nothing about mentors this season at all. However, Jimmy Iovine is coming back this season to help out. We did it the year before where we actually used record producers to help the kids. I want to do that again this year and try and give their journey the same journey that they would have had had if they had not had this competition but moved in to the music business directly. The more I can align it to the music business, the stronger it is going to be for them and their journey.<br /><b>SF</b>: In your opinion, with so many similar shows on the air, why do you think it is that “American Idol” is the only one producing genuine stars?<p></p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>NL</b>: Well, in fairness, I suppose its right to say that the other shows really haven’t been on the air that long enough to qualify against “American Idol.” I do think that other shows tend to concentrate a little more on maybe gimmicks, maybe their judges a little too much. I say that having just experienced two moments of talking about our new judges, but hopefully the programs themselves, when you see them, will show you that we’re still focusing on the contestants.<p></p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Also, the amount of votes that people vote on the show and their involvement with whom they want to see successful after the show if a big factor as well. Plus you have to say that Phillip Phillips’ song “Home” was just tremendous song and he was very lucky in having a great song to come out with. Also, Scotty McCreery is very good in that genre and people loved him. We’ve had success and we want to continue having success.<br /><b><br /> SF</b>: Everyone has heard a lot in the press about the other judges for this season, but we haven’t heard a lot about Keith Urban. Can you tell us a little bit about his contribution this season?<br /><strong><font color="red">NL</font></strong>: The topic of Keith Urban actually came up at TCA where somebody said, “All of a sudden country music is being embraced by American Idol,” which in truth I tried to make things right and say, “Well, we did country music right from the beginning.” Simon Cowell doesn’t like country music and I don’t think he understands country music. I don’t think he understands all the different genres of country music either. He just thinks that everything is “grandma got ran over by a reindeer” and that’s his assumption of country music and he has always put it down.</p> <p>However, we always had it there and we always had good country singers. We’ve always had it within American Idol. This is the first time I think that we’ve had a country judge and he is such a lovely man. He is the scratching post between Mariah and Nicki. He sometimes looks like he’s watching a tennis match with his head bobbing between the two girls, but when it’s his turn to speak, Keith gives his mind and he won’t put up with anybody else knocking him down. He’s had rounds with Mariah, Randy, and Nicki; a big one with Nicki, in truth.</p> <p>All the judges are very passionate. Each one of the judges I think is looking for something else this year. They know they’ve got a big job on their hands because Jennifer, Steven, and Randy did very well with Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips. They’ve also have got to live up to that expectation and they’re very competitive people. These are human beings that have experienced an incredible success in their own lives. They don’t want to be a let down in any way shape or form so they are going for the best that they can get.</p> <p>I think Nicki is looking for an artist. I think Mariah is looking for the complete singer/songwriter. Randy is looking for somebody that sings on pitch, and Keith isn’t exactly just looking for a country star. Keith is looking for an instrumentalist, a good singer, and somebody that can capture that sort of magic charisma, if you will, and connect with the public. They all have their own agendas. Keith is a great addition this year.<br /><b><br /> SF</b>: Speaking of Nicki Minaj on the judges’ panel this season, do you think we are on our way of having a greater embrace of hip hop music on Idol? I mean, could we potentially have a winner who might be a rapper/singer like Nicki?<br /><strong><font color="red">NL</font></strong>: I don’t believe so. I don’t think rap really fits in to “American Idol” in the sense that I believe rap is an art form in itself more akin to poetry, more akin to drama, if you will. I think rap in the streets, when they have rap competitions, is thrilling because these kids are making it up and having a go at each other. They’ve got something to say. This is about getting their frustrations out. Hip hop is a way of life. It isn’t a genre in truth in American Idol.</p> <p>I think what we’ll get is a lot of good R&amp;B kids. A lot of good street kids coming in that goodness knowing we need it because there’s very little music to get hold of these days. I think we’ve heard the Adele song book 2,987 times this season because there are melodies there that the kids can latch on to and sing. It’s really difficult these days to get songs that have got a verse, a chorus, a middle eight, and a melody. Once you get them, then those are the songs kids sing, and we all go, “Ugh!” and then you give them a whole list of 9,200 songs and they sing Etta James At Last. There was previous speculation that Urban could be named a judge, although Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams and Enrique Iglesias were also reportedly under consideration.<br />  </p> <p>"With the exciting addition of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, alongside Randy Jackson, 'American Idol's' star power has never been so great," executive producer Simon Fuller said in a press release.<br />  </p> <p>Earlier this month, country star Urban spoke at Metro Nashville Public School program, and addressed the "American Idol" rumors. "I would love to do it and hopefully that happens," he said. "I did get to do a similar role in Australia for 'The Voice,' and I really enjoyed it. The thing about those shows is that mentoring aspect... it's about passing it on."<br />  </p> <p>The announcement was made at the last possible moment, as all four judges will be filming the show's first auditions today in New York City. Upcoming auditions, hosted by the show's 12-season host Ryan Seacrest, will also be held in Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City.<br />  </p> <p>Carey was added to the panel in June, saying that "it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with 'American Idol.'" At one point it was rumored that Jackson would be leaving the judges' table to act as a mentor, however Fox has confirmed that he will be returning as a judge for his 12th season on the show.<br />  </p> <p>The series returns to Fox's primetime schedule in January, after the network's other singing competition series, Simon Cowell's "X Factor," wraps.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/keith-urban" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Keith Urban</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/nicki-minaj" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Nicki Minaj</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-season field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Season:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/seasons/12" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">12</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tv-show field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">TV Show:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tv-shows/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/keith-urban" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Keith Urban</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/talents/nicki-minaj" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Nicki Minaj</a></div></div></div> Mon, 17 Sep 2012 13:30:28 +0000 Pandora 23320 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2012/09/17/nicki-minaj-keith-urban-new-american-idol-judges#comments Steven Tyler Quits 'American Idol' http://shakefire.com/news/2012/07/12/steven-tyler-quits-american-idol <div class="field field-name-field-news field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/news/tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/news/443r_0_1.jpg?itok=4c8YaNRh" width="640" height="424" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/steven-tyler" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Steven Tyler</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Steven Tyler is leaving "American Idol" after a two-season run as judge, Fox announced today (July 12).</p> <p>"After some long, hard thoughts, I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit," Tyler, who judged seasons 10 and 11 of the reality show, said in a statement. "I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back. ... The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass."</p> <p>"Idol" creator and ep Simon Fuller said that the show will miss Tyler, but "I completely understand his desire to get back to his life as the singer in America's greatest-ever rock band."</p> <p>Fox has yet to make an announcement regarding the futures of the other "Idol" judges, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, both of whom are still reportedly in contract negotiations.</p> <p>When J. Lo stopped by NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning, she revealed that she has still not made up her mind about her involvement in "Idol's" 12th season -- although it sounds as if she's leaning toward ending her run on the Fox reality smash, which returns in January. "I've just enjoyed it so much. But I am thinking that maybe it's time for me to go and do other things that I really love to do… but then again, I really love the show!" she laughed.</p> <p>Tyler and Lopez both joined the reality series in 2010, after Simon Cowell -- along with short-term judges Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres -- left the show between seasons nine and 10.</p> <p>Mike Darnell, president of alternative entertainment at Fox, said that it has been a "tremendous honor" to have Steven on the show. "We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music," said Darnell, "but we always knew when we hired a rock 'n' roll legend, he would go back to the music." Fox would love to see Tyler back on the show in the future, he added.</p> <p>In recent weeks, the rumor mill has churned out a number of potential judges for the show's next season, with former "Idol" competitor Adam Lambert thrown in the mix just a few days ago. In a statement issued Monday, Lambert said that if "Idol" wanted to talk to him about judging, he'd "be more than flattered to have that conversation."</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/not-steven-tyler" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Not Steven Tyler</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tv-show field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">TV Show:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tv-shows/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/not-steven-tyler" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Not Steven Tyler</a></div></div></div> Fri, 13 Jul 2012 00:44:31 +0000 Peter Oberth 23312 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2012/07/12/steven-tyler-quits-american-idol#comments Ryan Seacrest Inks New Two-Year Deal to Stay With 'American Idol' http://shakefire.com/news/2012/04/23/ryan-seacrest-inks-new-two-year-deal-to-stay-with-american-idol <div class="field field-name-field-news field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/news/tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/news/6u6u_5.jpg?itok=0vDzexYS" width="640" height="855" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/ryan-seacrest" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Ryan Seacrest</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Ryan Seacrest is staying put at American Idol.</p> <p>As he hinted during an interview on NBC's Today show this month, Seacrest will remain with the singing competition show he's hosted since its launch in 2002. He has inked a two-year pact, which will pay him $15 million annually.</p> <p>The news comes as Idol, now in its 11th season, has seen its ratings post double-digit declines, down more than 20 percent in total viewers compared with a year earlier. His most recent three-year pact, which included his services on Idol as well as other potential projects, paid him $45 million (or $15 million a year).</p> <p>Fox executives were said to be particularly eager to keep Seacrest, who has been dubbed "the glue" that keeps Idol together. Show producers and network execs "cannot envision the show without Ryan," one Idol insider tells THR. "The goal has always been to keep him."</p> <p>Indeed, like judge Randy Jackson, Seacrest has provided the show stability in what otherwise has been a game of musical chairs. Seacrest has described his role as that of a conductor who keeps all of the trains running on time. The network's other singing competition show, The X Factor, dumped its host following the series' first season.</p> <p>To be sure, Idol is only one piece of the Seacrest's growing empire. The multihyphenate is close to finalizing a new deal with E! parent NBCUniversal that will include the already-announced role as part of the company's Olympics team this summer. Despite a report late last year that suggested Seacrest was being courted as a potential Matt Lauer replacement at Today, Lauer is remaining in the anchor chair with a rich new deal signed in early April.</p> <p>Still, multiple sources have noted that Seacrest's new deal with the expanded company likely will include such things as occasional appearances on the morning show. In question is what his ongoing involvement will be with E! News, a nightly entertainment news show that Seacrest co-hosts with Giuliana Rancic. Sources point out that his role with the show has waned as he's had to juggle other projects including Idol, while new NBC cable entertainment chairman Bonnie Hammer has aggressively courted new talent to strengthen the E! News bench.</p> <p>In a meeting with the press in January, NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt suggested he would like to see Seacrest host Barbara Walters-esque specials for his network as well as continue to produce shows through his Ryan Seacrest Productions, the shingle behind E!'s Kardashians franchise and Bravo's recently renewed Shahs of Sunset.</p> <p>Whatever the specifics of his new role, they will come in addition to his long-running Clear Channel radio gig and upcoming cable channel. Seacrest, along with partners AEG and agency CAA, announced this year that he will team with billionaire Mark Cuban to rebrand HDNet as a live-entertainment focused network called AXS (pronounced Access). Seacrest's RSP will have a production commitment with the new venture, though it won¹t preclude his first-look deal with NBCUniversal.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-talents field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Talent(s):&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/ryan-seacrest" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Ryan Seacrest</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-season field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Season:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/seasons/12" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">12</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tv-show field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">TV Show:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tv-shows/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-starring field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Starring:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/talents/ryan-seacrest" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Ryan Seacrest</a></div></div></div> Tue, 24 Apr 2012 01:43:26 +0000 Peter Oberth 23272 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/news/2012/04/23/ryan-seacrest-inks-new-two-year-deal-to-stay-with-american-idol#comments 'American Idol' Contestant Jermaine Jones Disqualified From Competition http://shakefire.com/news/2012/03/13/american-idol-contestant-jermaine-jones-disqualified-from-competition <div class="field field-name-field-news field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/news/tv" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">TV</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/news/11iulk78_1.jpg?itok=-pJC_qJi" width="640" height="855" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-is-exclusive field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Exclusive?:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/american-idol" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">American Idol</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/gossip" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Gossip</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/jermaine-jones" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Jermaine Jones</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Jermaine Jones has been disqualified from further participation on American Idol after it was discovered that he concealed "multiple crimes," TMZ reports.</p> <p>Jones announced his departure on Twitter, tweeting, "Awww I will no longer b on the show."</p> <p>Jones was reportedly charged with two crimes in 2011, one involving violence. Still, I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the performers that have come away from that show and found themselves releasing music, winner or not. On that note Kelly Clarkson was the first real big success story, in my opinion, from American Idol that went on to release anything memorable. She is a talented singer and obviously has a well oiled production team behind her to supply her with the kind of edge that she needs to remain competitive in the music world. So my question is what happened here?</p> <p>Don’t get me wrong. Stronger, the name of Kelly Clarkson’s latest release, is a well polished little piece of pop with all the bells and whistle’s of any respectable pop submission (but try not to hold that against it, let me do that) and Clarkson’s voice is as capable as its always been. Unfortunately the album, lyrically, is repetitive garbage, the likes you would find on any Taylor Swift album. While the album says Stronger its content screams insecurity. The majority of the tracks on the album are either in the vain of a woman telling her boyfriend he is not good enough for her and doesn’t deserve her, how badly she doesn’t actually want him to go, how well off she’ll be when he’s gone, how much she just wants to be loved. Make up your mind Clarkson. Worst on the album is Einstein which boasts a terrible chorus of Dumb + Dumb equals you, which even has a soulful backing choir to emphasize its terribleness.  </p> <p>Musically, like I said, the album is everything a pop album should be in today’s market. Its got a cross genre sound to it from pop rock to hip hop to experimental (sort of). Really its just a bunch of hat tricks that I’ve become accustomed to over the years with pop fast becoming the dominate genre of music over the airwaves. It sounds as it should in short, very well pieced together by the hard working behind the scenes people of wherever but at the end of the day its an album that suffers from a kind of mediocrity that is the mother of all guilty pleasures. Well worth checking out to see if its for you but there’s just no getting past the same old, same old quality of the writing on the album. As always final judgment is yours.  </p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-album field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Album:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/albums/stronger" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Stronger</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-artist field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Artist:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/artists/kelly-clarkson" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Kelly Clarkson</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-picture field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://shakefire.com/sites/default/files/styles/picture/public/reviews/Album%20Artwork_2.jpeg?itok=LRCEFuEL" width="640" height="639" /></div></div></div> Fri, 04 Nov 2011 09:48:33 +0000 AJ Garcia 6711 at http://shakefire.com http://shakefire.com/review/kelly-clarkson-stronger#comments
