My initial reaction to Vera when I covered the show’s series 1 release on DVD was that it had some great mysteries and that Vera was a slow forming, but worthy, character development case.

Here in series 3 Vera has all but stagnated. The show is peppered with small instances of Vera’s personal life; the way she looks after her male sidekick with a maternal instinct, can somewhat read victims and villains all the same, and does a little flirty bit with the autopsy guy. Still, she’s about as dull as you can get in series 3. There’s no more moving forward with this character, her sidekick barely registers aside from some plot progression storylines that come and go, and even the mysteries are a bit stale.

From episode one to episode 4 I just felt like the show was in it’s death throes, gasping for life by offering up convoluted murder mysteries that take too long to reach their climax with not much scenery along the way. That’s what killed the show for me. If you don’t have good character development with your main characters at least give your suspects ample screen time to provide some investment opportunities that will pull you further into the mystery. There just wasn’t much to love here my opinion.

Bonus features include Photo Gallery and text interviews with show stars Brenda Blethyn and David Leon. Guests include Saskia Reeves (Luther), Dean Andrews (Life On Mars), and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones).
