With all the reviews that I’ve wrote there have been a few that have had me going back and forth on how I feel about it. Most of the time it’s a movie that has made me go, I like it, no I didn’t like it, but wait I think I did. Nope, this time, and it’s actually one of the worst cases yet, it’s a CD that I’m going back and forth on. It’s taken me about an hour sitting here thinking about it and listening to the first CD again in hopes that I might make up my mind, it hasn’t happened. What I’m talking about is the 2 disc CD by Johnny Cash called “The Soul of Truth:Bootleg Vol. 4”.

I’m a Johnny Cash fan, there’s very few songs of his that I don’t like, but that’s all of his typical country/rock/folk/gospelish songs that I like. With this CD set the songs, all of them, are gospel. Pure gospel, none of his normal “man in black” themed songs or being in prison, but of loving Jesus and how he’s going to heaven, songs that I knew he sang but until now I had never heard. This is where my confusion comes into play. I like the songs because it’s Johnny Cash singing them. His voice is unmistakable and the simple beats being played are the same as he always plays. So when I heard the lyrics to the songs I couldn’t quite sing along like I’ve been used to doing.

These songs, though are rough and have that raspy voice of Johnny Cash singing them like he did all his other songs but they are still gospel songs. With a few of the songs, ok, more than a few, those first opening strings being played on the guitar had me fooled into thinking that I was going to hear ‘Walk the Line” or “Send Me a Picture of Mother” but once he actually started to sing I was thrown off. The songs are performed well, Johnny Cash does his normal awesome job in putting himself into the music, but my problem is I kept waiting to hear something else. I think if I had heard these songs before and was in a more church type setting, I would have enjoyed the songs a whole lot more than I did. But for right now the songs are not ranking high on the list for favorite Johnny Cash songs.
