Seuss adaptations have been pretty terrible thus far from the horrible Jim Carrey version of The Grinch to the poorly cast Cat In The Hat starring Mike Myers. When I saw the names Zac Efron and Taylor Swift I shook my head wondering if this was going to be another film Hollywood tried to build up off of pop culture fad. Fortunately the film was excellent. I had no idea that the film was going to be a musical and I also had no idea how they were going to adapt the short story into a full blown film. In short, they take the essence of the story and build around it a teenage love story that slowly but eventually turns into the environmental juggernaut that the Lorax is, was, and shall ever be. Danny DeVito (Matilda) voices The Lorax and the two love birds in the story are voiced by Taylor Swift (Valentines Day) and Zac Efron (New Years Eve). Narrating the tale is Ed Helms (The Hangover Franchise) as the Once-Ler (young and old). Efron’s character, Ted, is trying to win a smooch from Audrey (Swift) whose only real true passion is to one day see a real life tree. Whoever could make that happen would get a smooch or even a yes to a marriage proposal. Thus, Ted is off on his mission which leads him to The Once-Ler who narrates to Ted how he became a hermit who lives in a vast empty wasteland where truffula tree’s once flourished and the animals once were his friends. Absolutely fantastic. Meanwhile in Ted’s world the wealthiest man in the world, Mr. O’Hare (Rob Riggle; 21 Jumpstreet), owns everything from the mechanical tree’s to the bottled fresh air he sells. He runs the city with a subtle iron fist in a very Orwellian set up. He of course doesn’t want change to come thus takes a keen interest in what Ted is up to. All in all The Lorax is a hit. The writing is fantastic, the voice actors comedic timing is spot on, and the film manages to create a whole new world with the already existing world of The Lorax without making the original concept suffer for it. I absolutely loved it. So how was the BD presentation? PICTURE AND AUDO QUALITY: Audio is fantastically done. The big musical numbers sound great and the immersion quality throughout the film really sets up a glorious home theater viewing for the film. As far as the sound goes this is reference quality stuff. Pictures: |
